I recently purchased a 1997 coachmen santara class c with 460 v8 from an rv dealer (no warranty). on my first trip averaged 6.1 miles per gallon and had an intermittent check engine light the whole trip. suspect that the catalytic converter has been replaced with a dual exhaust system (missing oxygen sensor). am i looking at needing to replace the converter?

I have no idea what mileage you should expect from a 460 V-8. I do know that here in CA if you don’t have a catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, etc. there’s no way you will pass the biannual smog test.

My guess is that NY may have similar smog requirements. Did this RV by any chance come from out of state? Did the dealer supply any kind of smog certification? That is standard practice out here.

I didn't get any type of smog certificate. It passed the nys inspection. Not sure what the requirements are. I'm going to visit the dealer tomorrow and see what they say. My previous motorhome was a class c with the 460 v8 and I got about 9-10 mpg.

I have had several 460's and I am guessing that if you were getting 9-10, you had an incorrect speedo gear. I had a 460 VAN that didn't get 10 MPG. 6.1 DOES sound a little low for a C, but the dual exhaust shouldn't be the cause. My 98 Class A never got better than mid 7's. Maybe have a diags place run the codes and/or do a diagnostic on it. Throttle body cleaned, check EGR function, new air filter. And do you have alcohol gas in NY? It knocks MPG down 10%.

Mine is usually a little over 7, the best mileage under perfect conditions was just short of 10.

Fuel economy and Ford 460 are SELDOM used in the same sentence

I once had a 97 Coachman 30 ft Class A with the 460. The gas mileage would be from 6 to 8 mpg at 67-70 mph depending on winds and grade.

I do not think they came with C. Converters except maybe in CA. Mine did not have one, but I had a class A and I am in non inspection state. I changed out exhaust to a Gibson system and picked up a lot of power and slightly better mpg.

I think you have an older style code reader in that chasis, isn't it an E-350? I would get a reading with the check engine light on to see if it will tell you the problem.

Sit in the E-350's driver's seat. Locate the diagnostic plug, along the side of the steering column just under the dashboard. Remove the black plastic cover from the plug by hand to expose the diagnostic connection ports.
