I got on Google maps an plotted your trip from your place in Ny, to Harrisburg, Pa, Wytheville, Va where I81 goes to I77, from there to Ft Lauderdale, Fl is 1,457 miles, the route you have gone before and don't want to go is 1,360. So, it is approx 96 miles more, that's not bad, and you see some more of the country. I-81 is nice, right down the valley, I-77 is nice also. My self, I wouldn't drive around D.C. on a bet, every time I went that way traffic was terrible, they were even using the shoulders to drive on!

lathe11: Go to exit 1 on Route 95 in Delaware. Take Rt. 896 South which joins Rt 301 South. In Bowling Green, VA take Rt 207 West to Rt 95 at exit 104. Haven't been through DC since the early 90's. This route may take an extra hour or so if you don't run into any traffic jams through Baltimore and Washington (fat chance!) but it a much more relaxing and enjoyable ride.

There's a Flying J at exit 104 if you want to refuel before heading South.

If you decide to come down I81 out of Harrisburg, PA, you could stop at Candy Hill Campground in Winchester, VA for the night. It is easy off and on and a pretty campground. Stayed there this summer on my way home from upstate NY.

Looks like 81 gets me past the mess in washington and va, a little longer as retiredblade said but probably a lot less stressfull.

Not that I want to disagree with "Retiredblade" as I have taken his route also, but like he said it’s 96 miles longer. If you are getting 10 miles to the gallon like I am, that means you will use 10 gallons more of fuel and at $4.00 a gallon that’s $40.00 which is almost a wash, plus RT 301 is a little faster in time. So I guess you have to weight out what is best for you. I like Rt301 better than going all the way to I77.

Would agree on the bridge to 301 to 95x104 .

Flying J fuel stop , lots of parking for rest / nap .

Gasbuddy.com is showing Virginia & S. Carolina as the best fuel prices .

I have a 42' ft 5th wheel plus the truck, so we are about the same lenght and I have no problems. I take the TWY to Exit 15 and pick up I287 and follow that all the way to the NJ Tpke / I95. Then you are only paying the toll from there (Exit 10) to the end ($14.90 in Jan). Don't recall what the TWY toll was. The Delaware Bridge was $20.00. Then take Exit 1 to Rt 896 to 301.
You can do as "go-rusty" said and cut over to the Flying J or just follow Rt301 right to I-95. Like I said I'm either going to pay tolls or pay in fuel costs, so what is the better drive. Have safe travels!

You could also take I-84 to I-81 South in Scranton down into Virginia to Rt 66 east to Rt 17 south and pickup I-95 in Fredricksburg Va. Being mindful of commuter times it's not bad driving thru Richmond or taking I-295 East around it
Nothing wrong with that. I have come out of the middle of Pa and over Town Hill, I-70 and ran down 522 to 66 and over to Fredricksburg the way lilypad said. Good running road. I've also ran down Rt 29 to Greensboro, then down I73 and I74, hopped off I74 just south of Rockingham and ran down the back road to just north of Florence and hopped onto I95 there. Not a lot of traffic that way, but there is a lack of overnight spots.
