The starting battery on my rv was dead, so I de wides to utilize my car to jump start the mh. I connected the cables in reverse(pos to neg etc) now I am unable to get any power to the ignition switch. When you put the key into the ignition the usual light on the dash do not illuminate when you first turn the ignition switch. I am sure I shorted something. How should I go about trouble shooting this issue?

First of all, jumping a 12v system from another 12v system is connected pos to pos and neg to neg. Check your fuses.

Would that be the fuses on the power distribution board or under the dash? I have jumped this unit many time when it has been idle for a while but just made a careless mistake!

Are you sure you don't have a "dead short" in your battery and no power at all? Did you try the jump start again with the cables correctly attached? Try disconnecting your starting battery and connect directly with your jumper battery. Don't try to start it, just turn on the key and see if the dash lights up.

With any luck at all.. The very expensive alternator will survive.

However.. I'd not count on it.

(That applies to the one on the car too)

You most likely blew the ignition fuse. It is with all the other chassis fuses not the DC dist. panel.

By connecting reverse polarity I suspect you have blown MOST of the electronics in the RV. This could get VERY expensive if the engine computer is part of the damage.
Why oh why did you think you have to connect positive to negative etc

After the sparks flew have you tried to jump it with the correct polarity?

If not put the cables on it and charge it for 20-30 minutes before turning the key. The dead battery might have gone to nothing or even reversed polarity. Not likely. If things don't light up after 20 minutes then look for your fuse panel and check all fuses.

If you cannot find a blown fuse you need a test light or voltmeter. Often there is a "fusible link" a short distance from the battery that is designed to blow under certain conditions.

As for worrying about alternators and computers right now I would not sweat it. I would bet there are reverse polarity diodes in the computer designed to blow fuses before killing the computer.
