My current carrier does not allow me to suspend coverages, so if I drive my motorhome 500 miles and park it for a year, I'm still paying for the liability, uninsured motorist, collision and medical payments portions of my policy. All I really need is the comprehensive coverage.
Since I'm planning to leave my MH parked at an RV park the next several years, I'm wondering if anyone will sell me a policy and then allow me to suspend all but the comp coverage? Anybody out there have a similar situation? My contents would be covered under the homeowners policy, but since the rig is worth around $20K, I don't want to take a chance on a fire or weather-related damage.

Add note: I did see that Good Sam/GMAC has such a policy, but their full coverage policy costs were almost double what I now pay and even if all but comp was suspended, the savings are less than $40/yr.

Depends on your coverage cost. A stated value policy is cheaper. My coverage costs $265/yr for my 2005. UM doea add significant cost to a policy...so you can probably drop that with a simple waiver.

Is it paid for? If not thats why they won't allow not carrying full coverage. If it is paid for then you should be able to carry comp only. If not check with Geico. We have them for all vehicles and have found them to be excellent. We have the ability to (if we choose) to only carry comp in the off season, but since the difference is so small we carry full coverage year round.

It's paid for, so that's not an issue; sounds like Geico has a rating system similar to Good Sam whereby they know you're not going to drive everyday (or even every month).

where mine is registered the state requires me to have insurance as long as I have tags on the DP. Since I own it, not the bank or finance co, I only need insurance to have tags. BUT I carry full coverage as it cost to much to have burn to the ground without insurance.

Will you have liability coverage?

There can also be situations where just comprehensive coverage will not cover a loss. What if your motorhome is hit by by another vehicle? The driver then drives off. Hit and run. Collision coverage would cover this situation.

What if the other driver has no insurance? If this driver does not have insurance then they probably also won't have the money to pay you for the damages. Collision coverage would also cover this situation.

So even though you are in a RV Park can you be sure that some out of control other vehicle won't ever hit your motorhome?

Hi CM. I won't want to carry liability because it will be parked all the time. I do have an umbrella policy that would cover personal (non-vehicle related) liability. I suppose it is possible that someone in the RV park could smash into my vehicle, but I'd be willing to take that risk since in my 20+ years of RVing, that's never happened; in fact, I've never been around when I saw it happen to someone else's rig either.
I guess it's a personal choice as to what is insured vs over-insured and when my rig was worth a lot more, I probably would have felt differently.

Thee is nothing wrong with dropping coverages such as collision. Self insurance is fine as long as the person has properly considered the consequences.

This is why there is a category referred to as a park model. These are designed to be moved but used in a more permanent manner. A motor home; A, B, B+ or C, is designed to be used as a mobile habitat and so insurance companies insure them as vehicles. The insurance company has only your word that the RV is going to be used in a more permanent manner. As for suspension of coverage when not in use, this is usually allowed because the owner has all their properties insured with the same company and therefore it is covered by one or more of the policies which have had the premium(s) slightly modified to cover the additional risk to the insurance company. In your case no insurance company wants to end up holding the bag on a non covered claim because they have given you partial coverage, The courts have ruled in previous cases that dictate insurance company behavior.

So essentially, I'm turning my MH into a park model. If I were to drive it while it only had comprehensive on it, I can't imagine why any court would rule that a driver who dropped liability and collision would be entitled to benefits, but then again, I don't understand many court rulings.
