I went to buy all of my filters this weekend at a local dealer. I had all of my part numbers ready and vin number and engine serial number. Last year i was sold a Baldwin "B7177" oil filter and the Fleetguard cross referenced filter was "LF 3970". But in the store with the last six of the vin given and he pulled up the serial number and the filter came out as "LF3349". Now I am totally lost. Am i to beleive that the oil filter i purchased last year was wrong and that i could have had a potential problem. There are slight measurement differences and there seems to be thread differences as well according to online Fleetguard specs. Any help or suggestions is always appreciated.

USE THE LF3970 its a bigger filter
If there was thread difference I doubt it would have threaded on
Both filters are listed for ISB engines

If the filter had the wrong threads, it would have cross threaded when installed and consequently...leaked. Many filters can have a different exterior size, but the size of the gasket that mates to the engine is the key factor. You can have a larger/smaller filter but the same size gasket.

I would say that if the old filter didn't leak, it was fitted correctly.

Hope this helps'

voyRVing,
While my situation is similar to yours, it's not exactly like it. When it came time to change our fuel filter for our newly purchased, new to us, '04 Itasca Horizon 36' D/P, and a 330 CAT, it had a fuel filter visible from the rear of the coach that was a CAT filter. But, that filter had no clear bowl/drain on the bottom of it. I wanted that kind.

It required quite a bit of looking up numbers, cross referencing, from a few sources to get the one with the detachable fuel bowl I wanted. I had to make sure the threads were the same, the diameter of the gasket, inside and outside was the same etc. From that point on, I confirmed the cross referenced new fuel filter w/glass bowl, with all sources possible to make sure it was the one for my engine. All agreed.

So, as for your situation, not all too sure what happened here. If, your engine's been running fine with the filter you installed but, there's a new number or, cross reference I should say, then make sure, even if you have to go to alternate sources to confirm numbers. And, what does your parts person say your filter number that you are removing is supposed to fit? Does he say there's NEW cross reference numbers too?

My local CAT parts supplier was dead sure my engine had TWO oil filters and TWO fuel filters, based on my engine serial number. WRONG!!!!!! Mine, and many like it before my year and after my year came exactly like mine did, one and one. So, sometimes, we all try and believe out part people have situations under hand but, it's not always the case.
Scott

P.S. May I suggest an on line source for your filter(s). It's called the filterbarn.com. After all my looking around and purchasing locally, I found out I could get the same exact or, even factory filters, including shipping for way less from that source. Just a suggestion here.

When in doubt on air and fuel filters, check with your chassis maker. THEY are the ones who spec and install them. Can they order an engine-maker supplied fuel filter? Sure. But the decision on one fuel filter, two fuel filters and where they are mounted is up to the chassis maker.

I too use filterbarn.com......and I might add, if your total bill comes to $100 or more, there is free shipping. Typically, each year I order two fuel filters, one oil filter, on air filter, one hydraulic (ps) filter and then also an oil, fuel, and air filter for the generator. Between all of those, my bill typically comes to about $140 bucks. Every other year I add a filter for the air supply system....

Their web site provides cross referencing so that you can pick and choose which ever brand you prefer.

@Wolf10 I think you are constantly having to ask that question HAHA. Of course I always seem to forget that too. Its a 99 Fleetwood Discovery with Freightliner chassis and Cummins B5.9E engine.
@Fireup and Lanerd thanks i will try that website.

I have done alot of checking the numbers on websites and I think one of my first phonecalls will be to Cummins tomorrow or freightliner.

Thanks for all the help

Ya, sometimes my crystal ball fogs up.

Air and fuel filters, call Freightliner.

Oil filter, call Cummins (though Freightliner will know this as well).
