If your truck is a Ram with a diesel the only way to go is the Smarty programmer. I have the Jr. version and it is a very nice programmer. Lets you adjust tire size, turn on the high idle function and read DTC's.

Depending on the truck there'll be limits on what the rest of the drivetrain can handle. Dodge auto's can't handle much more than 425hp. Allison can take quite a bit, don't know about Ford. If you are running a higher hp fueling and towing then it's wise to have an EGT probe/gauge.
^^I agree with all of this except the Dodge trannies part. 2004 and earlier were a bit of an issue but the newer units can handle 800+ torque without modification and they hold up really well. And torque is the real issue with towing and drivetrain parts IMHO. Now if I could have my RAM exactly as is (Frame, Cummins, etc, but subsitute an Allison tranny? I'd do it in a heartbeat.
The 48RE is better than the 47RE but it won't last if you tow heavy and run the engine up near 500/800. Depending on the vehicle the programmer will do more than just add hp/tq. You can also adjust shift points, pressure, etc. If you add a bunch of power you get to find out which component is the weakest in your system, then after you fix that you find the next weakest.

Hmmm...., my experience with an 06 Dodge Cummins is quite different. Put a BD and K&N air filter on it at about 10k miles. Immediate difference in mpg towing (+3) and immediate difference in truck being able to stay in OD with 18k horse trailer. Truck has 125k miles on it now (about 50% towing between 18k horse trailer and 12k FW) and no issues with engine or tranny yet
Not true Rick. With a decent set of ARP head studs and a good custom tune, the 6.0 will deliver approx 200 more ponies at the rear wheel and gobs more torque. They are extrememly undertuned, over emissioned engines.

You quacking me up
#1 the OP didn't mention any sled pulling upgrades.
#2 it's well documented..... the longevity of a 6 running at over 500HP.
I'm sure you will post YOUR dyno sheet, or at least a link which is like 5 years old.
I'm throwing up the BS flag.
.............IF you add a tunner , be sure and put about $4,000 in a Cd so you can afford a new tranny at some point in the future . There is no free lunch because most of these add on devices increase in Torque and HP and override any kind of torque management protection installed by the manufactuer . , jf
Yeah, I would have to agree with putting a coupla G's into a savings account to pay for collateral damage from installing an aftermarket programmer. I know that the 47RE in my 1999 RAM would explode if I turned my Edge product beyond level 2 (towing mode). It kills me to know that I have an additional 150 HP at my finger tips (level 5) that I can't tap into because right now I can't afford a new torque converter, valve body, billet input and output shafts, new clutch pak and new solenoids and pressure ports etc. etc.
That being said, at least the Edge lets me monitor all of the crucial engine parameters such as fuel pressure, EGT's, trans temp and so on. The level 2 tow mode does deliver an extra 25 ponies plus about 100 more ft lbs of torque - easily handled by the 47RE without fear of grenading itself all over the highway.
Cheers!
