One year we stored our trailer in AZ but our home state is MI. Heckova problem getting insurance for that situation. After checking several companies we found Progressive but they insisted on an AZ billing address. That was ok since our friends owned the RV park but they don't own it any more. I know that people store RVs all the time in different states than the ones they live in. If you do that, what do you do for insurance? Our regular company covers the trailer anywhere as long as we're with it but won't in the situation above. Advice? Thanks.

We have done exactly this with Geico for the last 2 years with absolutely no problems. We live in Arkansas(at least my house is there even if I am not) and the RV is in Pasco, Wa. By the way our insurance was so much cheaper there it actually paid for the storage and then some. Ins in Wa. - $720/yr Arkansas - $2100/yr. Our unit is also has Wa plates which means we pay no Arkansas personal property taxes on it. Be careful about how your state law is written the catch here is the vehicle cannot spend more than thirty days in the state of Arkansas without getting new plates here for it.
I have a home in PA, but keep my 5th wheel in MT. I have State Farm insurance and they require us to get our 5th wheel insurance through a MT agent, while we get our homeowners, car and truck insurance through a PA agent.
We pay a slighter higher rate in MT than we would for the same coverage in PA, but otherwise we haven't had any problems.
The issue is custody and control. The idea is that by you abandoning your RV, any damage to that RV could have been minimized had you been there.
It's sad, but agents have been knowned to tell falsehoods. Read your policy, ask your agent to highlite the text in your policy to show that it is covered, while the RV is stored in FL during hurricane season, and you are up in MI.

This is not always correct, the insurance rates are based on the state of storage not your custody, our rate is much lower where it is stored than where we own a home, this is due to the crime rates of our home.
Isn't insurance confusing??? We live in Nevada, but our insurance is of Washington; the question of where we "garage it" is what state the policy is written;. good idea to KNOW what coverage you are paying for per that state. Im going to go over that stuff since this came up. thanks for the reminder.

Patty, you missed my point. I wasn't talking about costs. I was saying that you could find yourself with NO coverage if the adjuster determines that the damage could have been avoided/lessened had the unit been parked closer to your home.

I guess I must still be a little confused as 2 different companies I have insured with under this situation(Geico and Progressive) neither had any problems insuring me they just wanted to know were it was parked for storage(the tabs on the vehicle were not an issue) and in the case of Geico they wanted to know how many estimated days a year the unit was used. There is/was no written statements or inference of no coverage if it would have been stored closer to my home. I have never even heard of not being able o get coverage of insurance in any situation the only exception being upon the insurability of the individual. One of the issues that got us a lower rate was that the storage facility was gated and had 24 hour security as it could only be accessed though a gate via a year round campground. If you then had you unit damaged at a storage location other than where you told them it was stored for long term storage(i.e. you lied to the ins comp) then all bets are off.

This got me to thinking also. Our fifth wheel is sitting on a lot in AZ. We left it there in October to avoid pulling to Michigan and back to AZ in January. After I read this I called my agent (AAA.) He said there was no problem, we are covered.

Same with me, I keep the TT in MN and go through the agent there but the bill is sent to my house in KS.
