I'm checking all options, but haven't found anything yet.
I think the most likely scenario is a common wire (ground). I'll check with a multimeter the various sections of wire and report what I find.
Time is short, I just hope I don't have one.

You do not have a short...You have an intermittent "open" wire somewhere.
Shorts cause fuses to blow, battery going dead, melted wire.
This problem can be tough to isolate.
Here is a link to all the different wiring configurations. You will be after the tail light and ground connection.
Trailer wiring
If your turn signals, running lights and brake lights are not working properly then I would suspect the ground. If the brake lights are good then the ground is probably ok.
I have found a loose ground and the symptoms were dim brake lights and the running lights would dim when the brakes were applied.

Update:
****Thanks everyone for the suggestions and info. ****
It was the cord from the camper. Some of the terminals (at least one) was opened up a bit. I guess over time, it flexed back to correct contact.
I always twist the cord...I may stop doing this.
Works 100% after replacing the cord. $30 fix!
