Alton Brown Smoked Pork in a Flower Pot with a Hotplate for the Heat. Has anyone here ever tried this? I am thinking about doing it.
Here are the Videos of him doing this. It is in two Parts.

I like Alton and have learned a lot from him. But if you want to smoke some meat here and there, go to Lowes and buy their $40 charcoal smoker. Take resonable care of it and it will last for years.

Is it starting to get cold where you are? Electric heat and smoking can be tough in a cold environment because you have no temperature control. I used to have an electric smoker and Winter smoking meant using damp towels and blankets to insulate the smoker enough to get the heat desired.

Alton Brown is a smart man but some of the junk he does defies good sense. This would be one of them.

I think it's gimicky and cute but not practical. Super bowl party, or for giggles maybe.

My neighbor built Alton's smoker, and I use my Little Chief Smoker, and he usually wins for longer smokes. I think that the thermal mass of the clay flower pots and the more efficient/predicable electric element helps.

We grow oysters, mussels, clams and geoducks on our beach and smoke them all... except for the geoducks that are not quite ready yet (2 lbs in ~5 years).

I'm ready to move up to a real smoker next summer.

No reason that it wouldn't work, but I suspect by the time all the money and effort went into it it might not be worth it.

The clay pot would allow some heat retention and there is really nothing wrong with smoking meat with electricity. It works well in spite of what some say.

You only need a constant 225 degrees and a means to create smoke to do a butt. A good butt on the other hand generally should have some moisture in the mix and that is something commercial smokers take into account.

We did it! It works fine except the hot plate has to be turned to the highest setting for 8 hours and it burns it out. We did it a couple of times and it burned the hot plate up and no longer functioned. The meat was exceptional though. I would take the advice of the other and buy yourself an inexpensive smoker grill.
