I'm sure the topic of locking gas caps has been discussed many times here, pros, cons, etc.

I remember back in the 70's when siphoning was quite common around here at least, that there was a funnel shaped coil of wire that you could put into the filler tube that would stop or at least make it harder for a thief to siphon your gas, if I remember correctly they started putting them in at the factory also.

Are these things still around or didn't they work good, or what do you do to prevent siphoning?

they're still around and while they'll stop the casual thief someone who is determined will simply puncture your gas tank. when i used them back in the day i found them more trouble than they were worth mostly with the lock freezing in the winter.

I don't use a locking gas cap either. I do not want my tank punctured.

I didn't think they could siphon the newer vehicles.
Guess I was wrong.
We have been using a lot of gas for some time.
Last night wife filled up the pick up about 2 miles from home.
We started to Church and noticed the gauge at a little less than 3/4 tank.
We drove a total distance of about 10 miles this morning.
Filled up a the very same pump. It took a little over seven gallons.
Apparently they siphoned or pumped or whatever enough to fill their 5 gallon gas can. Apparently this isn't the first time.
i will be paying more attention to the Dog, in the middle of the night.
I won't kill them but they will think I have
Amazing how loud 500 Smith and Wesson is close up.

I agree with the above. As painful as it would be to refill the tank, having to have a new tank installed as well as refilling it because someone took an ice pick to it would be worse. I just try my best to avoid areas where it would be easy for someone to get the fuel. JMO

My new Escape does NOT even have a gas cap. It is self sealing. Comes with a "Special" funnel to put gas into the tank, If you ever let it runout.

On this topic, anyone know the Stant part number for a locking gas cap with tether for my '08 Four Winds on the F53 Ford Chassis, V10?

Search did not answer this.

Stants website wasn't much help either.

My diesel pusher does not need a locking gas cap because it is behind a small door with a lock. But if the cap was exposed I would consider buying a locking cap. You can still get them at any auto parts store.

I have a locking gas cap since I lost a 1/4 tank of gas a couple years ago. I park in the center of the condo with the gas filler away from people. Since I am the condo president I think one of the disgruntled residents did it. We had made a decision on gas billing that got a few of them angry.

I do use a locking gas cap but when I started using it eight years ago my reasoning was to prevent someone from putting something into the tank, not taking it out. That used to be a problem years ago. What would water or ______ do to a diesel fuel system and/or injectors?
