Occasionally my 2010 F250 will show "Trailer Wiring Fault" on the display. I have it send a Vehicle Health Report to my e-mail and it says that this particular problem is highly likely to be in the trailer itself, not some problem with the "Tow/Haul" circuitry in the truck. When this happens I do not have any brakes on the 5er. It usually only lasts for a minute or so. Have any of you guys ever had this problem? What is there about the brake circuits in the 5er to cause it to lose all braking intermittently? Any help would be appreciated!

Have had the same problem. Found the problem in the plug, female side had a loose connection.

Also common to have the brake wire rub through where it runs through the axle and short to ground.

I had a similar situation with my truck (see sig) and 5th wheel. I had just picked up the 5th wheel from storage and had driven about 150 yards when the factory brake controller started 'beeping' and displayed the message "Check Brakes" (or "Check Trailer"), I don't remember which.

Anyway, I removed and reinserted the trailer plug in my truck and the alert ceased and has not returned since. I suppose the plug was not fully making contact due to corrosion or a loose wire. I was not moving fast or far enough to determine if the trailer brakes were inoperative.

The next time I have the 5th wheel home I will check for loose wires and clean the contacts both male and female.

I have to say that it was nice to know that the controller was "paying attention."

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

I put up with the same problem for a year. I took it to a shop and they couldnt find anything wrong. i finally noticed that it only happened when my Fresh water tank had been filled. I replaced the plugand finally pulled down the driversides underskirting of the camper from the front of the camper to the rear axle and found the brake wire was grounding out on the campers frame when the fresh water tanks fill hose would have water come up and slosh in it. I spliced new wire and anywhere the frame or a cross member looked like it may come in contact with the brake wires I cut a piece of hose and zip tied it to the frame so I never have to pull that underskirting off again. Start at your plug first and check the contacts for corrosion, if thats not it then disconect one wheel or axle at a time to see if the problem stops then,if not you now where your problem lies. Good luck

The problems caused by the wires running through the axle is so common that I pulled mine out. They are now tie-wrapped and taped to the back side of the axle. When the grommet begins to wear out or is not positioned correctly the wires will rub and cause all kinds on intermittent issues with brakes. Also the inside of the axle can have very sharp edges which you cannot see. When having intermittent brake or controller issues I highly recommend taking the wire out of the axle and see if this corrects your problem!!

I know the 2008-10 Ford IBC will often do that with electric/hydraulic brakes. If your 5er has those, that could be the problem. Ford manual warns of that too. If you have std electic trailer brakes, I'd put money on a wiring problem. Any good trailer shop should be able to fing that easily.

This is what happened on mine. I finally figured it out by disconnecting the brake wire to one axle and ran it down the road to see if the problem went away but the problem still occurred, so I reconnected that axles wire and disconnected the next axles wire and ran it.... Problem disappeared. I tugged the wire out of each end of the axle hole a few inches to see if I could see a rub but never found one, probably rubbed somewhere deeper in the axle? I then ran a wire externally outside of the axle in place of the internal one and the problem never returned.

Good luck
