Are the shocks on a fvr the same as automotive shocks? What do I need to do to change one out? I was underneath the coach today while spraying the slide gears and noticed that I have a broken shock. How do I fix it?

Spray the ends with WD-40 so by the time you get around to taking the nuts off they'll be loosened up.
Take off the good one and take it to an auto parts store and get the fattest one they sell with that much travel and the same mounts. Because if yours were factory installed they were the most minimal size that would fit.
Replace all of them. Give the WD-40 at least 24 hours to penetrate the rust before attempting removal.
That's what I would do.

most times there is a number stamped in the shocks upper dirt shield. This number can be crossreferenced by NAPA or other good parts stores

Agree except use PB Blaster on the nuts instead of WD40.

If your 5er has A rubber equalizer instead of the steel one take the shocks off and throw them away. You can go to the Cedar Creek owners Club website and yo will see that A lot of us have done this with our Creeks. Forest River dosnt put them on most of the product line since 2010. Plus if you do replace them you need to be careful in getting A large bodied shock. It can really tear the sidewall of your tires up quick if it hits them while running down the road. When our tires were replaced under warranty it was suggested by the factory to remove the shocks. I did and have never looked back didnt effect the ride at all with them removed. Tires were replaced due to the shocks hittting the sidewalls and cutting them.

Get Monroe replacements. They are trailer specific with a larger bias in controlling the rebound action than a typical automotive shock.

You either have to cross-reference or determine the part number by dimensions.

I use this PAGE to id shocks - scroll down to the bottom. Click on the Monroe part number for dimensions.

Usually buy them at Stengel Brothers online as they seem more reliable IMO. Once you find a part number enter the number in the search box HERE.

All the dimension and cross-reference info is on the Monroe Commercial website below but you have to dig the right PDF files out -the first link is just easier IMO.

I will agree with takeing one off and going to a good parts house like NAPA and have them do a cross-reference, then you can pick the one you want by quality or price. JMHO

You might want to try the Spring Works in Grand Junction - I have found them to be extremely knowledgeable when it comes to any type of trailer or vehicle suspension.
