I would definitely reserve. Very busy time of year in FL and most of the nicer parks fill up fast. Last year we reserved 6 months ahead of time to get in where we wanted for XMas. You can sometimes "catch" cancellations.

South FL weather is generally nice in winter altho' it can (at times) get colder. The more south you go the better, but also the more popular the RV parks. If going to the Keys expect to pay more and *definitely* reserve. If going to Miami look north of there (e.g. the Broward County Parks or Everglades NP).

We stayed just north of Miami last year (Markham Park -> search my blog for pics if you want them). It was very nice, but XMas & New Year was completely booked out.

Two weeks here and two weeks there and two weeks somewhere else. No fun staying in one place to long.

Maybe it is your bubble that needs busted, we consider all of our visitors that come for a week or 6 months snow birds.

I hope the OP is referencing rt 95 to indicate that he is looking to stay on the east coast of Fl.? From Gettysburg, heading down 81, 77,26 then 95 is a far more sane way to head south.

I would like to thank everyone for their comments and good info. Its nice that everyone is so helpful. I'm not sure what JoeGood's intentions were but I thought his comments seemed kind of rude. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Anyway, to address some of the other comments... I do have 2 campground directories that I always take with me, one Woodalls, the other I forget the name of. Also have a laptop with internet in the truck (if I could just get my wife to use it to tell me useful things like whats ahead of us and not what we already passed) Im not really locked in to going to the east coast I just thought it would be warmer and I would like to see Key West though it doesn't have to be this trip. I was thinking of taking 95 because I thought the road conditions would be better. I've been up and down 81 in the summer and was thinking I might want to stay out of those mountains and thus avoid possible ice and or snow.

You didn't mention your itinerary, but you mentioned small children, and you'll be driving right past Epcot/Universal. Between Christmas & New Years they're crowded beyond belief. Worse than the highways that get you there.

Being from the midwest I consider SE Florida a freak show. We live in SW FL and day-trip it to the east coast. In Key West everybody seems to have their hand in your pocket up to their elbow. It's pricy.

The west coast has secluded beaches, parks & nature preserves. The east coast has South Beach and the Gay Parade in Key West. I don't know how adventurous you are, but if your my son traveling with my grandkids, I'd advise "West Coast!"

You will not have a problem finding campgrounds along I 95 for an overnight. I travel that route every year making my snowbird run from NJ to FL. I do generally call ahead during our lunch break rest stop, to see if sites are available - sometimes make a reservation if it seems necessary. If you are Passport America, there are several participating cg's, making the few hour rest easier on the pocket.

To get warm weather, look at Orlando and south. You don't need to go all the way to the Keys for warm, so unless that is where you want to stay - expand your destination and you will have better luck finding a site. Yes, some cg's might be fully booked, but there will be something. Like others, I think FL reservations are needed.

I guess I agree with the campingman to some extent on Key West. It has changed a lot over the years but it never was a place for small children.

My college age kids used to go there for spring break 15 or 20 years ago. But college students do not go there anymore. It's all about selling time share condos.

We used to enjoy the very cosmopolitan atmosphere. Now you can't even take your dog with you into a bar. The condo sellers a ruining all the fun because they want Key West to appeal to more conservative folks with lots of money.

By the way, the big parade is around Haloween, not Christmas. You got to see it to believe it. I hope the condo people don't mess that up as well.
