The first few miles out of Gilroy is two lanes, but is fine, although I haven't driven that stretch for awhile. A few miles east of Gilroy near Casa De Fruita the road is 4 lanes divided hiway and is very good. You do climb a steep grade for a few miles, I believe it's about 6% and then decend down with a a couple of steep grades, but you'll be fine. Nice drive all the way to I-5.

I drive that route, both directions, on a regular basis when I visit my family in Calif. You will experience a bit of everything, multi lane hiway to 2 lane country road all in decent shape. It is a main route for travelers so expect traffic, including semis. There are a couple of grades but nothing to be concerned about (if you've driven hills before that is). What you do need to be aware of is the wind, especially in the hills, it never stops and can be gusty in places. Stop at Casa da Frutia, lots of big rig parking, take a break and walk around. It's been a stop for Calif. travelers for more years than I can remember.

That was the first road I ever drove a motorhome on. Had just picked up the rig from the dealer in Gilroy. It was nighttime and a ton of trucks were coming at me on the single lane section. Great fun.
So I'd say yes it is just fine. I've been over it many times since then and now enjoy the view.

I just went the other way last week. I saw a herd of elk in the field below the dam so keep you eyes open. You pass by San Luis Reservoir.

It's been over 15 years since I was on that road. I do not remember it being excessively curvy. but are you sure you want to take the I-5? That has got to be the most boring stretch of road I have ever seen, even more so than the I-10 between Las Cruces and AZ (and that is a seriously boring road!). You might want to consider the 101. A little slower but much more scenic and you won't have to climb in and out of the Angeles mountains (besides the grades, snow is a possibility).

There are a few miles between Gilroy and Casa de Fruta that is twisty two-lane in rough shape; it gets a lot of traffic and little maintenance. From Casa de Fruta to I-5 is nice four lane divided highway with a climb over Pacheco Pass (1300 feet). Many trucks and RVs take this route, but I prefer 101 south to Paso Robles and 46 east.

Couple rough places in there (was there 1 month ago) otherwise nice road to drive. Should be no problem.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.
