I am posting this in the Motorhome Section and 5th Wheel section. I am looking for opinions as we are planning on upgrading our RV. We are a young family and currently with two kids 7 year old and 6 month old, my wife and I and a dog. Currently we have a Weekend Warrior 30'bumper pull toy hauler with a Ford F250 Diesel Tow Vehicle. We generally go to the desert with a dune buggy 6 to 7 times a year and to the river 4 or 5 times a year and maybe a few other trips in between.
We are torn between going with a big 5th Wheel Toy Hauler and a DRW Truck or a DP Motorhome and 24' enclosed trailer. I know many of you have been in a similar situation so I am looking for opinion, pros/cons etc.
The Motorhomes we are looking at are in the $60,000 to $80,000 range and are 2003-2006 39' or 40' Newmar Dutch Star, Fleetwood Discovery, Excursion, Revolutions and a few others. The 5th Wheels we are looking at are 2008-2009 Weekend Warrior CR3905 and SLC3905s

Thanks in advance for the opinions
IMO, I can only say that DP's are meant to put miles on. A lot of miles and don't know why else one would want one. I mean we're not getting all we pay for the way it is in most cases. As for my RV preference, with money not an object, the DP's are my preference for highway rolling, ease of setup and overall comfort.

We had to make the same choice many years ago and chose to go with a motor home. Easy on every body. easy potty calls, easy to do meals, easy to take naps all while traveling. On times when you do not want to go to the desert with a dune buggy 6 to 7 times a year and to the river 4 or 5 times a year you can tow something else and go other places. We take ours on family visits and that way we all have our own bed and more space for the kids to get out of hair.
Cannot go wrong with the Newmar.

Opinions, you will get lots of those on this board. At one time I had a 40’ coach and pulled a 23’ enclosed car hauler. It was great in some ways and had some drawback in others. A couple of pluses with the motorhome is you are all travelling in comfort together, lots of seating and room, an inverter for on and off the road entertainment, a onboard generator, set-up is a snap, washroom breaks are easy for the youngins, you are sitting way up high with good visibility for all on board, food and drink is readily available while traveling and the list goes on.
The up side to having the enclosed trailer; I had my pickup truck in the trailer and when we arrived out comes the truck, my hinged work benches folded down and I had an enclosed “Man Cave” complete with welder, cutting torches and a complete shop to work on or build anything my little heart desired.
The down side with the trailer was at a couple of campgrounds we stopped at I had to unhook the trailer and park it in a storage area away from us. This only happened twice but I missed my stuff.
With the motorhome you will have a full 40’ of living area so everyone has space. With a 5th wheel toy hauler even if you get something 40’ long half of your living area is taken up with toys. It will take a lot more truck than you have right now to haul that 40’ 5er.
I could go on but I won’t at this time. Hope this adds to your knowledge and if you have questions let me know.
Happy Trails
Ron
For the most part I am leaning toward the motorhome for all of the ease while traveling reasons. Only thing holding me back is having to make the kids bed each night (dinette and couch) as the hauler would have dual rear queen beds and also 4X4 with the truck in the desert is nice to not worry as much about getting stuck. Lastly the fact we always have other people wanting to go with us there is more sleeping room in the toy hauler....
smknf250,
Well, as you can see, lots of answers and opinions. I will agree with most of them in the fact of "convenience". Convenience in, driving, leveling, potti runs, comfort, and much, much more. The motor home can be used also as a camping vehicle for vacations when you're not getting your teeth rattled around in Glamis, Buttercup, or Gordons Well.
Yes, we've been in the exact same situation. We made the choice of a motor home years ago when the kids were small. We've never regretted it. Now, one thing, most toy haulers (trailers that is) have no compartmentalization. EVERYTHING must go inside, and in boxes in your living space. In a decent size Class A, you've got lots of outside storage for your stuff.
Sure, a 4WD truck has its benefits in the sandy conditions of those areas mentioned but, would that be the ONLY reason for choosing that combo? I certainly would make camping area changes in Lu of a far better, quieter, nicer accommodation ride and setup. But, that's me.
As for the rigs you're thinking about, the Discovery is a very nice Fleetwood unit that has a good rep. Many of those units come with the 330 HP CAT engine. A good choice. Take your time, look them over.

Look at the Safari Simba toy haulers. They are in your price range, provide three queen sized beds, a garage area with a hydraulic lift for your toys. 2007 Safari Simba

You can always opt for a bunk room class A and haul a small 4 x 4 in the trailer.
