We check for truck stops around the 1/2 mark, don't like to create problems while traveling.

Your not alone..
I did the same thing with our first TT towed by an older 3/4 T Suburban 350 v8. We were Reno to Vegas. I pulled into Pahrump on fumes and the grace of God. The fam was sleeping and woke up as I pulled into the first gas station. I was sweating bullets. I learned from there our rig got terrible mpg's towing and to look for the first gas station at a half a tank.

My DH thinks I'm nuts to start worrying about gas at the 1/2 mark. He'll wait until 1/4, by then I'm threatening him. I've told him about the replies on this thread, plus he knows we'll get lower gas mileage with the TT. I think he'll gas up more often now. If not, he's walking.

I go to a 1/3 tank about with a 44gal. tank that is roughly 33 gallons. leaves me with 11 gallons reserve. when you get 6.5 mpg. the 1/4 tank mark is scarry!

Seems like most people start looking for gas at 1/2 a tank

This is actually one reason I've got plans in the works to add a second gas tank to my rig (grafting the 35 gallon tank out of an old ram Charger onto my pickup) to roughly double my fuel capacity, 440 miles between fuel ups instead of 220.

When I did my Eastern Oregon ramble, it was a gamble on gas stations on some of the back highways I took. I fueled as often as I could find, but sometimes the stations were pretty far apart and their state of open depended on if the owner decided he wanted to be bothered that day.

Saw alot of old mechanical fuel pumps (the old dinging kind) on that trip.

I start looking for a station when we hit 400 miles on the trip odometer. When the low fuel warning buzzer goes off we have 15 gallons left in our 75 gallon tank. We've bought as much as 65 gallons at a time - I prefer to not cut it that close too many times!

Also, make sure your vehicle is indeed "full" after you fill up at a station:

- My 1995 GMC V8 pickup takes about 4 more gallons after station pumps automatically try to shut off.

- My 2005 Ford V10 motorhome takes about 5 more gallons after station pumps automatically try to shut off.

Do I see a trend here? Filling both vehicles truly full gives each about 50 more miles of range.
