Has anyone installed a Hayes Energizer XPC in a 2007 Chevy Avalanche?

I installed one and the brake controller only works occasionally I press on the brakes. My Avalanche came with a towing package and the wires for the controller was under the dash. I know it is hooked up correctly.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about your Hays controller but if it isn't working properly, it may be time to replace it. I've got a Hensley "true controll" brake controller that I think is a piece of junk. 2nd one after the first one had what I think was poor performance. I've made up my mind that after two of them and both working about the same that it's the controller design or something about the units. I'm going to be purchasing a Maxbrake controller soon and getting rid of the Hensley unit.

The brake controller was installed in my Dodge Durango and I took it out to put in my Avalanche. This is when it stopped working correctly. I don,t know if the truck is not sending the signal or if the unit is now defective.

Did you make sure the 2 wires tied up under the hood were connected to the fuse box? On my 08 Avalanche w/ tow package there were 2 wires that the factory doesn't hook to the under hood fuse box that power the brake controller and 12v feed to the travel trailer.

Hi tmilicia. Yes the wires are hooked up under the hood. Did you hook up your brake controller or did a dealer hook it up?

Are the brakes working on the trailer? Do you feel them engage if you slide the manual lever over at low speeds? Have the breakes been adjusted recently?

I hook everything up myself (if you want it done right, do it yourself). After some bad experiences many years ago, I don't let anyone touch my stuff anymore. If you have a multimeter, you should be able to tell pretty quickly if it is the trucks wiring or the controller that's the issue.

Hi opnspaces,

The brake controller works with the slide. I don't know if you are familiar with the Hayes brake controller, but there is a red LED on the unit and it lights up when I apply the breaks. Sometimes when I apply the brakes on the truck the controller will not activate. It works all the time with the slide. It looks like the controller does not like the power signal from the truck.

Well if the model number you have given is correct then what you have is a PENDULUM type controller.

If you are applying brakes via brake pedal while stopped it is not going to energize the brakes.

Additionally it MUST be installed AND calibrated properly or otherwise the brake controller is not going to operate correctly.

Please read the installation manual and insure the controller is mounted correctly, it must be mounted PARALLEL (front to back) with the direction of travel.

HAYES MANUAL

Per manual..

"Mounting angle and mounting direction
Mounting angles between –35 and + 90 degrees can be accommodated by the controller. THE UNIT
MUST, HOWEVER, BE INSTALLED SO THAT IT IS PARALLEL WITH THE TRAVEL OF THE TOW
VEHICLE AND TRAILER.

WARNING:
• If the controller is mounted incorrectly, the pendulum cannot operate
correctly and may cause loss of braking."
