WOW $4 really! Wait till you come back on the northbound trip and have to pay the toll just north of the flat bridge over the Susquahana river, They hit me for $20.00 at that each trip back from A southern trip.
NOW if someone has A around the block trick for that one, I really like to know about that 1

Google maps and check the "Avoid tolls" box, it will give you a route with as few tolls as possible (Sometimes there are no alternative routes).

Funny, I pay $2.50 to save 5 minutes and avoid a little bit of traffic when I go to visit my in-laws. And that is just in the car.
Unless I can stop and do some shopping or stretch my legs, getting off the interstate just to save an small toll isn't going to happen. Now if it is a longer way around with some scenery included in the side trip and a night at a nice campground, possibly.

Its $4 for a car, but somehow it is $16 for a truck pulling an RV. There are actually 2 different tolls driving I95 from northern Maryland thru Deleware. The tolls are actually so expensive that it is CHEAPER for me to drive to Lancaster, spend a night at a nice campground, and then continue on to NYC when we go up there. Its $10 for both those tolls for a car, but I remember it being over $40 for the truck and RV...
Let me weigh in on the toll road debate -- we avoid tolls, at almost all cost (if it saves time and money - fuel - then we will pay) -- we have been driving up the eastern shore of Maryland for almost 20 years -- nice drive, less traffic only toll is north bound over the Bay Bridge, DMB is free North bound.
For those of you who disagree with the 5 minute drive around, I have a hard time remembering when I did not sit in traffic -- and have to wait more than 5 minutes to pay a toll for the use of a road that does not save me time because of the time lost at the toll booth.
It may be me but I appreciate the information on the drive around -- may not use it as I can count on one hand the times I've used I-95 in the last 15 years.

JMHO,
I respect your thoughts on tolls but one way to avoid the wait at the toll booth is to get an E-Z Pass. With E-Z pass there is seldom a wait. Without an E-Z Pass there is seldom not a wait.
Since you dislike tolls I assume you are not using an E-Z pass.
From where you are located, the eastern shore route is close and feasible. For those closer to the metro area. The shore routes are not as advantageous.
For me tolls are a part of traveling thje interstates, while I'm not happy about them I'd rather have tolls and well maintained roads

I just got off the phone with the Delaware Toll Operations Administration. they told me 2 axles $4, 4 axles $7, 6 axles $9. She had no idea what I was talking about with duel tires on rear. But like Kirk I have been charged different prices at different times sometimes as much as $45 one way, and never less that $20
