If you take the I-81 route stay on I-81 to I-77, then I-26 to pick up I-95 in SC. Its more relaxing than trying to pick up I-95 in VA and only 12 miles different.

I came back this way just before Thanksgiving. There is major construction southbound on 81 before 77. Due to blasting, the traffic was being detoured off 81. The traffic was backed up southbound for many many miles. Probably a lot more than 10 miles.
I would check before I made the trip with someone that has driven it more recently for a traffic report.

I did this in June (to Cocoa Beach)...I went I-95 to I-87 over the Zee (no toll going west), then I-287 to I-78 into PA. I-78 turns into I-81 about 20 miles east of Harrisburg. From there, I stayed on 81 into Virginia, took I-66 at Front Royal, then US17. That meets up with I-95 at Fredricksburg. Richmond was a breeze (though I hit it around 9:30pm)...I went straight through, but if you need it, I-295 is a bypass that rejoins 95 at Petersburg.
From there, it was a straight run down 95. I didn't run into any significant traffic between Richmons and Jacksonville. At Jacksonville, there are two bypasses, I-295 to the west & state highway 9A to the east. One was under construction in June (I think 9A). AFter that, straight down 95, pick up I-4 at Daytona, that takes you right to Disney. Enjoy.

You can take the GSP but watch out of low overpasses in the right lane.
If you want to come through NJ come down 84 to Newburgh, then 87 (Thruway) to 287 at the state line. 287 south to the NJ Turnpike (about a hours drive, exit 1ish). Then take the tpk (also I95) to exit 7. Jump over the 295. Nice three lane road with no tolls. It will take you parallel to the tpk and put you across the Delaware Memorial Bridge. (The turnpike will do the same thing). From there you CAN go down 95, OVIOD the tunnel in Baltimore, pick 95 back up, then 495 around DC, then 95 straight down.
Now I will be taking that round in a few weeks, some of it for the first time.
I live and drive in NJ. I'm used to traffic. If you not you might prefer the scenic route on 84/81/77.

Quote: I came back this way just before Thanksgiving. There is major construction southbound on 81 before 77. Due to blasting, the traffic was being detoured off 81.
Went north and south throug this section over Thanksgiving. The blasting is still going on although we didn't experience it. There were electronic signs indicating when the next blasting would occour.
Here is some info I found on the VA dot site. It looks like you are fine unless you hit the area Monday to Friday near lunch time.
Quote: When will blasting take place this week?
Barrier wall has been installed on the shoulder of southbound I-81. Burning activities continue on the project. Drivers should be aware of the following traffic impacts:
• Detonation of charges will be scheduled daily, Monday through Friday, between 11 a.m. and noon.
• Southbound I-81 traffic will be detoured off I-81 at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns) onto Route 11/460 and back onto I-81 at exit 118 (Christiansburg). The detour will be implemented daily sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and will be removed immediately once slopes have been scaled and the road is deemed safe for the traveling public. State Police will assist with this detour. A right lane closure will be in place on westbound Route 11/460 during the detour.
• On northbound I-81, a rolling road block starting at mile marker 114 sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. will be used to slow traffic. During blasting, the on-ramps will be restricted onto northbound Interstate 81 at exit 118 (Christiansburg) and onto southbound I-81 at exit 128 (Ironto).
