Just pulled the old TV out of the front compartment in prep for flat screen update... what a job this turned out to be for me anyway. I have a new respect for those that have managed this task and made it sound easy. Finding steel and enough strength to make me feel comfortable took a bit of geometry and construction. I'm sure I overbuilt the structure. Now I have a question for those that have done this "how to you support and hold the swing out TV while going down the road"?

I've searched and found methods for holding along a wall, but this new set is partially inside the existing front opening. Would straps and foam backing suffice or is there a better method?

Thanx for any help.

I used the type of mount that you hang the top of the TV mount on the rib, and then the bottom latches and locks. It does not swing out and amazingly doesn't rattle. Very pleased with it. Changing out the TVs, for 2 Led units was the first thing I did after the RV purchase. Macktee

On my first RV, the old TV area left a lip which hung out enough for the bottom edge of the TV to rest on when stored. I glued a thin rubber strip to it to prevent rattles. Then the swing out structure was all mounted inside the old TV area. I used two short bungee cords inside the compartment attached to the bracket on the back of the TV to hold the TV back against the opening. The sides of the opening was lined with a soft foam I covered in vinyl to prevent rattles. Was always secure and never rattled. Just pulled the TV out slightly to release the bungee cords to swing the TV out.

It worked but after a while I found myself never using the swing out of the TV and just leaving it in place. So for my current RV I just used I board over the old TV opening, hinged at the bottom and held in place by a latch on either side of the board. Then just flat mounted the TV to the board. Can see the TV fine without the swing out arm and I can fold the TV down to access the new storage area behind the TV.

The new LCD Flat screen sure make it a lot easier since they dont weight anything... I got rid of all the big heavy analog TVs. All went to the local dump...

I've had pretty good luck with puting up a 1/2-inch large board and use the spring toggle bolts to hold them up to a outside wall. Then just use the LCD TV mounting hardware all the TV stores have (Lowes/Walmart). the large board up first spreads out all the weight of the HDTVs.

One guy on here installed one in a boxed in shadow type box on the living room side and extended the box into the bathroom side and then walled in the part that stuck out inside the bathroom. Looked like it belonged there. The bathroom side only had a full mirror on it anyway so all of that just got moved in a couple more inches...

You can find all things you need for the cabinets and walls from Lowes.

The big thing to do is get rid of the old heavy power hungary analog type TV sets... The new LCD HDTV Flatscreen HDTVs like the 22-inch VIZIO works great picking up the new digitial full screen mode High Def local Natl Digital HDTV signals (which are free) using the OTA BATWING crank-up antennas. This is for the CBS-NBC-ABC-FOX-PBS local broadcast tv stations. We get 6-36 station just about anywhere we go here on the eastern side of the US. They spread out more on western side I think.

Our cabinet was about 1/2 in too small for the 32" flat screen we wanted, so rather than altering cabinets, we opted to mount a hinged piece of 3/4 plywood, with black vinyl upholstery, as a door, to which we surface mounted the TV.

All GREAT ideas, thanx. Our TV is not centered and my DW wanted it so I could more align it in her direction on the couch, thus the swing out. Liked the bunge cord behind idea, might look in to that. Looks like others have done a great job. I'll see if I can get a pic of my "sturdy" mount. I tried to leave room for storage that I'll build in later (famous last words)
