I have always bought extended warranties for my vehicles, negotiated a price. I can't say they saved me much but I always pretty much broke even before the warranty ran out.

I think much of it depends on how handy you are at fixing things that break, and things will break.

I am not handy at all, just took me nearly an hour to replace a DTRL bulb on the TV, most could do it in 10 minutes. So extended warranties make good sense for me.

give the name of the co. you are dealing with. Mine would not pay my mobile mechanic for many reasons recently. they paid him for the same problem 2 yrs. ago. they might pay if he can show a permanent business address. the only reason I carry the plan is because it came with the rv for $25.

I am debating the same issue with my DW. Not to highjack the discussion, but talking with Good Sam and dealer offering ExtraRide on our Montana. Notice both supposedly backed by an insurance company. Extraride by Protective Company and insured by Lyndon Property Insurance Company and GS by some London insurance company. The price is about the same except GS is for three years (supposedly renewable for one year at a time and no guaranteed renewal rate) and Extraride is for six. Annual cost is about the same. The ExtraRide has emergency roadside service included - Platinum Plan. The ER is $1,970. It is definitely a gamble both on the companies and the Montana!

Go ahead and get it, you will probably never need it and if you do then you will learn about all the exclusions and the few places that will accept it. Besides, it is getting close to Christmas and the salesman needs your money.

I bought the Xtra Ride warranty from wholesalewarranties.net in California. I really shopped for the best coverage and price. No one could beat this company's price. I paid $1,297 for the best plan with the $50 deductible, five years. Have not used it yet. I was and still am very cautious about third party warranties having been burned years ago by Warranty Gold. WG was a leading third party extended warranty company for cars. They went belly up about nine or ten years ago. Just this year they settled for pennies on the dollar, i.e. $92 back on a $1,400 warranty.
Good Sam's coverage and price was not even close to Xtra Ride. I think my sales person's name is Daniel.

Jayco wants $4,000 for an extended 5 year warranty after the 2 years it comes with. I passed but $1,700 doesn't sound too bad.

I am still wayne_tw wrote:

Ask to read the actual contract, not the sales brochure. Pay no attention to what the salesperson says about it. Remember, these are huge profit centers for the dealer. Offering it for you at $1700, means he is paying about $800 for it. If you think you want it, then offer him $1000.

You have not mentioned what the deductible is or whether they only cover a "covered" part or anything that fails because a "covered" part fails. Example, a connecting rod in the engine fails, causing catastrophic engine damage requiring a complete new engine. Will they pay for the new engine or just pay for a new connecting rod?

Most extended warranties are carefully written to exclude the most common failures (remember they have access to repair orders written nationwide) and then to make conditions that ultimately exclude uncommon failures.

Be careful which company underwrites the warranty. Some company's business model is to collect lots of money on these warranties, then go out of business leaving the warranty worthless.

X2 on reading the actual coverage documents and not a brochure. Lot o' money to put down only to discover later the list of what's not covered is longer than the list of what is covered.

If you read the contract before you purchase and understand it and that means asking questions there will be no surprises.Of course these companies are in business to make money all companies are.

We have many different kinds of protection policies, Home, Health, car, truck, camper and we will most likely not get our monay back on any of them..so why do we have them???
