I just got home tonight from Portland, OR where I saw the 96 Monaco Executive that I've been looking at on the internet for a long time. It's a 40' and has the Cummins M11 on a Roadmaster chassis. I just wanted to ask about a few things that I'm just not too sure about.

1. It appears to have front drum brakes. I expected disc.

2. When parked and you dump the air, only the front of the coach will lower to 12" off the ground after 24 hours. The rear does not seem to go down at all. Is this normal?

3. The interior is in great shape, but it has that old RV smell. Can that be fixed?

4. Can the Sony B&W rear camera be easily upgraded to color?

5. It uses a GM ignition key. I'm not sure why. I wonder if I could put a Ford ignition switch in it. It would make me feel better.

Thanks in advance.

I now have a buyer for my van, but in the meantime the blue book value on the 96 Monaco has dropped $5K in the last 45 days or so. The seller will not accept less than $40K.

This is also a rare mid-entry coach with a bathtub instead of a shower. I can't find another one like it.

If this is the motorhome you like and want donn't let the blue books drop in estimated value make you reconsider. If you were willing to pay the 40k 30 days ago then pay the 40k or what ever you can negotiate now. That is still a lot of motorhome for the money.

Just my 2 cents

Rather than Febreeze in the carpet cleaner, use Javex II, or "Bleach for the unbleachables" type laundry product. It does a great job cleaning, and removes all the old smells.

The seller just told me he checked the date code on the tires and they are 8-10 years old. Can I run these?

In a word, NO.

Under ideal conditions (always run at proper PSI, covered to protect them from UV/sunlight, driven frequently, etc, they still need to be replaced after 8-10 years.

Since you really don't know how they have been cared for, that would not be a reasonable risk.

So my E450 van is in the process of being sold now and this means I will be the new owner of a 96 Monaco Executive.

What's the best way to take delivery of the Monaco Executive?

I was going to fly to Oregon and drive it home, but the seller said he would fill it with fuel and drive it here with for me with his pickup truck in tow and then drive his truck home. He would cover the costs for fuel, etc.

If I fly there, the ticket is $330 and then I have to pay for fuel. What are your thoughts?

I was looking forward to drive it home but then this would save me like $700.

He also put 6 new tires on it this morning. He agreed to pay for the front two, I will pay for the back 4. They are Toyo M154's.
