I don't think anyone disputes the fact that a F-150 will never be a 2500 or 3500. Nobody expects them to be. That's why the auto industry builds heavier pickup trucks along with the F-150. It's all about choices. My choice being a 2012 F-150 and not because Motor Trend named them "Truck of the Year". After all, Motor Trend also named Plymouth Volarie and Chevy Vega "Car of the Year" and a lot of us remember what junk they proved to be.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with an F-150. They are good trucks and that's why they sell like hotcakes. The fact that they are cheap helps too. But there's too many guys out there being convinced with these commercials like the nissan titan pushing a sandrail up the dune, or the 747 landing in the bed of it. A part of me thinks that there are guys falling for this, and thinking their F-150 can just pull anything. A truck is a truck, doesn't matter what brand is on it. I'd say there are a lot of guys driving a WAY overloaded F-150 and have no clue that it's overloaded. I have seen several just this weekend that had the headlights pointed skyward. Yes, a 3/4 ton, or 2500 works for me and it doesn't float everyone's boat. I'm happy ford is doing good in this crappy economy.

And I've seen just as many guys pulling 38' land yachts doing the same thing .. it's not exclusive to 1/2 ton owners. I came from a F250 7.3 to the F150. For what I use it for the 3/4 just didn't make sense. Not to mention diesel is 40-50 cents a gallon more around here. Now I have a "do it all" truck .. at least for what I need. it has plenty of power to tow my TH, is appointed like a luxury car inside with a ridiculous amount of leg room in the back seat, rides better, is quieter, and gets better mileage day to day than my 250 did.

Being a GM guy, this is a really good thing. GM (and Dodge) will need to have an answer for this engine. Given that Ford has set the bar where they have, GM will have to aim just a bit higher. Ford is selling alot of these ecoboost trucks, now they are Truck of Year should only be an explanation point. Just as the Chevy HD was TTY for 2011 and on the cover of nearly every applicable publication in America, so will the Ecoboost. I only hope that GM will make their answer strong enough for a HD pickup. Its the one down fall in the Ford. Plenty of torque (over 400 foot pounds) and its available at a fairly low rpm range, but putting it only in a half ton is unfortunate. Put that engine in a 3/4 where you can really make use of the power, now you have a pickup.

I agree! Even though I'm not a GM guy I'm anxious to see what their answer will be.
As for a HD truck there is lots of talk (wishes actually) that Ford will come out with a 5.0 Ecoboost. That would make a 3/4 ton scoot down the road!

Congrats to Ford - but that little 1/2 ton will not pass me up the hill - a 2006 Dodge Cummins with a little computer readjustment.

Unless you've got money to throw away, might wanna be careful before throwing down your pink slip. Once you start talking about modded vehicles, all bets are off. One of my favorite sayings 'Speed costs money, how fast can you afford to go?'

A local speedshop in town has done a little computer adjusting (among other things) on their f150 ecoboost. They've managed 390 HP and 420 TQ at the wheels.

The stock tires on my truck as the same ones fround on the one ton trucks (LT load range E) My payload 2,550 is equal to my previous 3/4 ton truck with the diesel engine, and in over 100,000 miles of towing with later model F-150s with trailers of 6,000 lb. and the last 60,000 miles 8,000 lb. I have never even SEEN an axle failure on one. You're correct it's no 3/4 ton truck but in MANY ways it's better (more nimble driving unloaded, capable of approximately the same loads. Puts out more torque at lower RPM than any gasser out there and doesn't drop off at altitude (just like a diesel).
