Planning a trip for late June from St. Louis. Would love to try a East Coast Beach. Have two teenage boys. Hear great things about Myrtle Beach, Cape Hattera and wrightville Beach. Please send suggestions, experiances and camp ground info.
Thanks!
Pirateland in Myrtle Beach is great. They have a nice beach, paddleboats, Pool, lazy river, arcade, mini golf, ice cream shop, and playgrounds. It is well maintained. There are a lot of seasonals and a lot of golf cart cruising. The inland sites can be a little tight between trees or tight to back in but the beachfront sites were pretty big. One thing you do have to watch is the ocean front/premium sites mean they can be either on the pond or by the dunes. None of them are directly ocean front. Myrtle beach is a nice little town but not much of a boardwalk. We had a good time and were easily able to keep ourselves happy for a week there. Oh and the water was great, we were there in early June and couldn't have asked for better weather.
It depends on what you and the guys like to do. My guys (grown now) always loved the outer banks - especially down in the Hatteras/Frisco area where we could take the truck on the beach for surfing and surf fishing. We have always enjoyed Frisco Woods Campground in Frisco because it is right on the soundside which is excellent for kayaking, paddle boarding, and kite boading, and the sunsets are unbelievable. The water temperatures are usually quite comfortable in June.
Since you are from St. Louis, you might not be into so much water sport stuff, and as others have mentioned, a place with a boardwalk and all the other landbased activities might make more sense. Others have mentioned Myrtle Beach, Virgina Beach, and Ocean City, Maryland, but another area is right here in Cape May County, NJ.
There are dozens of campgrounds from plain to fancy, and you are in easy driving distance to the Ocean City (NJ) and Wildwood boardwalks as well as other points of interest including Cape May and Atlantic City. Lots to due, although there is a chance the ocean water will only be in the mid-60's, the weather will be beautiful ....

IF camping. You can do Myrtle Beach, and any of the oceanfront Cgs are pretty good. PirateLand has the largest, and nicest oceanfront sites. But the rest are Ok as well.
You can also do the Outer Banks. A few good CGs there.
However. There are no CGs at Wrightsville Beach. there is a Stae Park At Carolina Beach. But it is not on the ocean.
They're all very different, and we like all of them for different reasons.
Cape Hatteras is mostly all about nature. Very beautiful and fairly laid-back.
Wrightsville has the beach and the historic sites in Wilmington and Fort Fisher, but there's not a whole lot of other things to do.
Myrtle is very commercialized. There's the beach and an absolute ton of other options for activities and entertainment.
My teenage boys' choice would be Myrtle, but they like to spend a little time at the beach/pool and a lot of time doing other things (golf, mini golf, shopping, etc.). They like the other places, too, just prefer Myrtle for the number of activities available and the convenience of all the activities.
The water temp will be much warmer at Wrighstville and Myrtle than at the Outer Banks.
