I just put a switch on my trucks back up lights so they don't blind me reflecting off of the trailer and now don't NEED back up lights on the trailer.
Good luck / Skip

The 7 way connector has a pin for the back up light circuit, but not all vehicles have this pin connected.

Our trailer came from the factory with backup lights. My opinion, no big deal. With a 20 ft.+ truck, the trailer tongue and a 31 ft. trailer they do little if anything to help me see what I am backing into.

Maybe they do warn others that I am backing up...
But, when ever I do back up at night, I have my wife act as spotter w/ walkie-talkie.

On my current fifth wheel and the one before that, I put a set of small driving lights under the back of the trailer and ran a wire under the trailer to the junction box that the truck cord goes to. The yellow wire is usually capped off but connects to the back up lights on the truck. Some people may not want/need them but I really like them.

On my SIL 5er we ran 2 wires back for the dual color LED backup light, 1st color is white that we tied into the backup wire(and also for the wireless camera), 2nd color is Amber that is activated by one of his factory AUX switches on the dash. We tied this to a strobe module so that when Amber is activated it is a strobe to alert traffic if he is broke down etc. It is real nice to have the dual color ability of this setup and they are very bright.

I plan on doing what Pinesman did above. I have already determined that my back-up light wiring (Yellow Wire) from the truck is active when in reverse and I want to install the same type of running lights like Pinesman mentioned under the trailer frame . I think I will mount my back-up on the two rear sides of the trailer to light up both sides as I am backing in. I usually do my walk-around to determine what is directly behind me that I can't see.

I never did check in with the local DMV people to see what safety inspections and mounted lights on the rear of the trailer entailed. In the automotive world here in Virgina anything mounted has to work and be an DOT Approved type light before passing safety inspections. Sometimes you have to remove the lights before they will pass you on safety inspection. We got away with lights like this in the JEEP world by putting socks over them...

hi
Just finished that job

On my Jayco it had no back up lites. At 39 ft my pickup back ups were a fairy tale.

Bought some Recon projection lights and identified the wire that feed the license plate lite and side marker lites . I found that wire in a bundle coming under the drivers side slide on the 5th wheel and tapped into it. Hid and ran a wire to the back left corner and installed a switch and ground wire and ran a wire to first light and split wire to both projectors lites and installed a ground at each light.
I bonded the switch to the Hidden hitch
with jb weld and the wires with some silicon.
Just turned it on last night and it lights up the night

I think I first put the lights on about 4 years ago and the trailer has passed VA state inspection everytime. I just used a set of small round driving lights from walmart, around $20. When I traded trailers in March, I took them off the old trailer and put them on the new one and they still work great. They can be adjusted to face down and to the sides so you still light up the area behind you without blinding anyone watching for you.

I also just mounted a set of lites purchased at walmart. I put them under the TT bumper and wired them to a switch inside the rear storage compartment. They are not connected to the tv electrical system at all. I just turn them on when I need them and/or the wife turns them on when see goes to the back to help me get parked. They are also handy if I need lite at the rear of the TT after I get set up.
