A question for you experts. When I start the generator the GFI trips. I can reset it and it is fine the rest of the time the generator is running, on shutdown, and when connecting to shore power. Any ideas on what would cause the GFI to trip when starting the generator and work fine the rest so the time?

Thanks

Where is the gfi located and what load/s are on it when generator is started? More info needed.

Do you have an automatic transfer switch? Maybe something is glitching during the shore-to-generator transition.

After it was first happening I did replace the GFI but it is still occurring. I am thinking about the transfer switch. I have been disconnecting shore power prior to starting the generator so the transfer switch is not actually transferring. However, I was having a problem with one of the transfer switch relays not picking up. It seemed to be stuck. I fixed that so now both pick up but this GFI issue is still there. I was wondering if the previously sticking relay could have something to do with this GFI issue.

My experience is that GFIs get flaky over time - I would install a new one and see if the issue goes away.

The GFI is in the bathroom, however the circuit covers the bathroom, kitchen, dining and outside outlets. As far as loads, there is no load to speak of. The microwave is plugged in but not running aside from the clock and a night light is on in an outlet in the bathroom.
