The computer I use, at home and RV. Is getting kinda slow. It has a
Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHz, 256 Mb of RAM and a 33 GB Hard drive, of which 12 GBs is used space. I have done Defrag and error-checking.

Speed test is the following: Ping 104 ms, download speed 1.82 Mbps,
Upload speed .50 Mbps

When I'm on a web site and a phone call comes in on Magic Jack, my
system can't sometimes handle that. So, do you all think it is better
to add memory, for about $40, or just buy a whole new system for
$400? Everything else seems to work pretty well.

However, the slowness of my system, can be very frustrating. I bought a new monitor a few months ago. But, I could use that with a new computer. I could just by a new computer without a monitor.

I bought a new laptop (netbook, I guess) that is nice and small....and I hook up my old desktop flat-screen monitor to it when I'm at home. It's got twice the memory and HD of the desktop, which was also about 6 years old. (The monitor is newer)....it's got everything that the desktop had, but the DVD burner, which I never used. And, if I really need something that is on a CD, I can always use my wife's laptop (larger unit, so it's got the drives) or one at work.

I'd recommend getting a laptop, IF you don't really need a HUGE amount of memory and HD space (for gaming), but just want to deal with the usual daily stuff. I bought This one , so I could Skype with my Grandson, as it's got the camera and software. I LOVE IT!! I think it's also available with less options for less money.

Happy New Year

The computer is obsolete. But there are alternatives. Leave it at home and buy a laptop or tablet for most of your work. Coupled with a wireless router and you would be flying.

I think that your slow download/upload speeds are a result of what your service provider is giving you and not because of your computer.

Why not replace the Magic Jack with a Magic Jack Plus which doesn't require a computer? If you are happy with your existing computer, this might be the way to go.

What is your internet service? Those numbers are pretty slow and you would bog things down with a VoIP call over the Magic Jack.

As far as the computer, you could get a new tower with 4-6 times the speed and 10 times the memory and disk space for $200-300, or a laptop for $400-500.

Exactly! Now the problem with an incoming call getting lost is probably the inability of your computer to handle it and in that case additional memory may help.

oh it can't possibly be the cpu or a variety of other things?

memory adds are by far one of the most wasted upgrades.

I just went thru your situation and with a seven year old desktop and went with a new tower for $300. OMG what an increase in speed and newer operating system. Everything works so much better. I was so pleased I also replaced my 5 year old laptop. Technology changes so fast but also improves greatly. And right now there are great prices on components.
