I am making plans now to go to Progreso, Mexico, for dental implants. Many snow birds who spend winter in the Texas valley have their work done there. I have friends who have had implants done there and have never had a problem. The reason I am choosing to go to Mexico to have the work done is because the specialist my dentist sent me to wants $3300 for one front tooth. That doesn't include four others. Quite frankly I'm choosing Mexico because I can't afford to have the work done in the U.S.

If you think the price of having work done correctly by a Dentist in the U.S.is expensive wait til you see what it costs to correct the mistakes they can make in a 3rd world country. My dentist of 20 years has warned me about going there. I trust him. Much of the work he has seen is of a temporary nature and costs more to correct than than getting it done right to start with. I have no plans to go there.

Not to disparage your dentist but what would you expect him to say. I have had poor work done by three different dentists in the U.S. in the last few years that has had to be re-done. I have no doubt you can have poor work done anywhere in any country just as you can have good work. You have to choose carefully.

People blather on about malpractice in the U.S. vs their being none in Mexico. I can assure you that unless you have major physical problems resulting from poor work in the U.S. you can't afford to pursue them unless you have deep pockets because plaintiff attorneys aren't going to handle the work on commission like they will for other injury claims.

We have had all of our dental work done in Nuevo Progreso Mexico the past 5 years and have been 100% happy. Some of their equipment was more up to date then our dentist in MN. And the crowns they used were made in Mc Allen Texas.

I wonder if anyone bashing the dentests in Mexico actully have had any work done there? Dozens of our friends also go there and I have not yet heard a complaint of any kind.

pawatt, would you mind sharing the name of the dentist you use?

I met with Dr. de la Rosa Saenz today about the implant and have scheduled with him for next Monday. He uses an oral surgeon from Reynosa who comes over and actually places the implant. Dr. D will then later install the final abutment and crown after a few months.

We met with our friends tonight for dinner to discuss dental work in Progreso, Mexico. Wow! As it turns out he had been suffering since his US dentist removed teeth and did a mouthful of work! Someone from their church told them about the dentist in Progreso so they called and made an appointment for two weeks later. He has had a LOT of dental work to overcome what was done in the states, and had implants as well. He has had a wonderful experience and has not suffered - and has done well since. It is now time for him to return to Progreso for an annual checkup.

I failed to say that the dentist our friend uses has a specialist from Monterrey come in to do the actual implant work. The crowns are made in McAllen, Texas.

What would be wrong with partial plates vs. the risks involved with Mexican dental work? I've had the same set for 25 years almost trouble free. You pays your money and you takes your chances...

Funny you should say that. I have yet to use one, but I have never heard anything bad from those that have either.

What I find even more interesting is our Canadian friends would never even think about going to a US dentist when they are in Southern Texas (with a tooth problem.)

Some don't even like going to our US Doctors and putting up with all of the insurance issues that we have created in this country.

Think some people need to leave the US more and see the world to get a better picture of how things really work out there. Isolationism is not the answer.

I know nothing of Progresso dentists but my DW has had extensive implant work (6) plus root canals and capping of all upper teeth all done in Algodones across from Yuma. Dr. Carlos Rubio did the work and it has been excellent. She just completed her first year checkup with absolutely no problems. We had gotten an estimate exceeding $50,000 from our dentist and the specialists he referred us to here in the States, one of which even included a dental college for some of it so it was a cut rate because students would do the work. The complete price tag in Algodones was $17,000. There are several excellent, US trained dentists in Algodones and we have no qualms about crossing the border there.

Both retired. Travel with Nicky the Schnoodle. Son graduated and is teaching high school math. We still love our 2006 34' Allegro Bay XB and have 40,000+ miles on her.

Based on my poor experiences with three different U.S. dentists I would have to say the same thing.
