What if you're from out of state and traveling through Texas? If stopped in Texas and you don't have the special license are you prohibited from continuing to drive the RV?

Yes, you driver's license must allow you to drive in your home state. All other states recognize your license. Yes, that is reciprocity.
HOWEVER, vehicle and operating laws such as weight limits, length limits, speed limits, etc change state to state and you must conform to the rules in each state.

Just finished my test at the Texas Department of Public Safety in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Yes you do need a CDL class B license to legally drive a motorhome weighing more than 26000 pounds. During my test on the first day I took a written exam on the mechanics of air brakes. This test consisted of 20 multi choice questions and some of them are tricky. You must study the book on the proper operation of air brakes.
The driving test consisted of a short entrance and exit on Interstate 30 and then some driving in an industrial area. You will be tested on backing your motorhome onto the curb and you must me wihin 18 inches of the curb.
The final part of the exam is operation of the air brakes. You will need to have wheel chocks in your rig. The examimer will ask you to chock your wheels and then bleed your brakes by pupmping the brake pedel and release the brakes with the yellow know.
Yes you do need this license in Texas, yes they do enforce it, yes your insurance would be invalid if you are driving with an invalid license.

rtillery Do us all a favor. Look at your new license. Does it say Commercial Driver License across the top next to the word Texas. If it does, it is a CDL. If it does not then well it ain't. I believe what you have is a Non Comemercial Class B.
In addition in order to obtain a CDL you must have a valid Medical Examiners Certificate before Texas will issue a CDL.

srx-6 my drivers licenes is a Texas Commercial License class B. Nowhere in my first post did I mention non commercial. This is a license you need (if you are a resident of Texas) to drive a large motorhome over 26k with air brakes.

Doesn't matter if it is a class A or B if it is a "CDL" Commercial Driver License you need the medical. You do not need a medical for a Non Commercial class B

Been a truck driver in Texas for over 25 years. I have carried a Commercial Driver License since before Bill Clinton mandated that we all get a "CDL" Worked freight in Houston, we had drivers that drove class A and we had drivers that drove class B only, both had to have a "CDL" and a valid medical before they could hit the streets. Had to show both to dispatch before we would get our paperwork for the day. Have you ever had a Commercial Driver License before this one?
