I plan on upgrading my old cathode ray TV's to new digital flat screen TV's. I'm looking for pro's and con's on LCD's and LED's. I am not ever going to need HD so 720p is fine with me and I don't want a plasma. I'm just asking for opinions on one versus the other. Thanks, Marty

They are both LCD sets the only difference is the type of backlighting. LED uses allot less power. Picture quality is comparable.

I went with LED partly because they were, generally, thinner.

Perhaps this 5-page thread on the subject will be of help:

All LED's are LCD's.....hehehe

LCD televisions have a fluorescent lamp in the back providing the light and LED screens are lit up using hundreds or thousands of tiny light emitting diodes. Each pixel has its own light emitting diode to light it up.

Side lite LED's can be very thin & light weight.

HERE'S an article on the differences etc.

Go to a store that has lots of TV's on display showing same channel......walk up & down them until the right one says "Buy Me"

Go to check out....go home...set it up...sit back and enjoy

We replaced our old 25" analog in 5'vr with a 32" Vizio LED/LCD.
1.75" thick (thin...HA) and 13#

I also changed to a 32" LED up front and a 27" LED in back. Because of the weight and thickness. They mounted very easily. However, the Visio is a great make, while I am not happy with the Dymex 27. Due to the low cost I will probably take the Dymex out and replace it again this year with another Visio. Macktee

As mentioned they are LCD with back lit LED. I'm going for the LED only because it's thinner and a bit lighter.

Went with LEDs due to being brighter(helps when your eyes are gettin old). In addition due to thickness was able to mount one on a wall adjacent to a slide that only had a couple of inches of room. Manufacturer is irrelevent-just compare and pick the picture you like best.

Got a better picture, viewing angle, better blacks and brightness with a new 60" Plasma(no thicker or heavier than a LCD) for the house(first house in 20 years)-would not advise Plasma for coach due to heat. The smaller LED/LCDs have a better picture than the smaller Plasma.

I just finished putting an oak door on the cupboard that used to house a large heavy TV. I hung a 24" LED LCD TV. on the door. It is much better than the old TV much, much lighter, only 1.5" thick. and I have all that space behind the door for storage.
