I thought this was important to post. How many people use hand signals to communicate with on coming traffic?

I do and it seems about 1/2 of the others on the trails do. Which means about 50% look at you with a big ??? mark on their face when you give them a high five or peace sign as you meet on the trails here in Oregon.

Good write up by Terry, never hurts to remind everyone.

Ditto to what 2blazers said, I've taught my kids/wife how to communicate when in a group, but half the crowd I see doesn't have a clue.

Yes, using hand signals is part of good trail etiquette. Agree that about 50% don't understand/think you are just being weird/friendly, not realizing you are trying to avoid head on collisions!

Good idea to remind other riders about trail courtesy. And I would like to add one thing. If you see someone stopped ask them if they need assistance. And please slow down when passing someone. We stopped over the weekend to help a Polaris Ranger that broke down. And most everyone who came by did slow down. But one couple just slowed enough to get around us then got right back on the throttle and roosted us pretty bad.
One of the ladies got a nice welt from a rock. I would really like to have educated that couple on trail courtesy.

I always do but agree about 50% understand, the others are those "other people" that we can never get to understand what proper offroading is all about and proper stewardship, etc.

I just figured this out last weekend. I was wondering why people were holding there fist up, till I saw a 4, then 3,2,1, fist. I must have looked like an ass by just nodding at them.
