Here it is from the front

inside looking foward

inside looking back, shower on left potty on right. couch folds into a bed.

the diesel engine. needs attention.

rats nest. 2 new batteries that look kind of small looks like more would fit. i may buy 3 big deep cycles from walmart for it.

water damage below back of fridge

roof with tar on seams and plastic taped over cracked vents.


water damage above front drop down bed.

water damage around A.C unit. this unit was installed in 1993 i found the reciept in the packet. seems to work.

there it is. it is not ready to go but I don't think it is a lost cause. i have a lot of other project going on and won't get to this for a couple monthes but i will get there. i plan on 1.) tune up engine. new fuel filters and lines, oil filter and go over it see what else it needs. 2.) replace all brakes and rebuld master cyl and wheel cyls and whatever else it needs repack the wheel bearings and pull the axles and change the diff and tranny fluid 3.) get the water,and generator and heating systems working right. new batteries, figure out wireing issues. then last but not least the inside. my wife is ready to go on this right now but i have a priority list. i am not sure how in depth i want to go with it but at am minumum i will replace the carpet and paint it. i may gut the whole thing and redo it all. depends on my mood by next spring.

I see you bought the dorm fridge,I did the same except I went w/4.5 cf,it dont look bad,is the roof solid?I installed a 1000w msw inverter to run the fridge while driving,does the job plus powers tv/dvd/vcr,good luck ,plenty of help on this forum

Here's the Winnebago brochure for the 84 Chieftain.
This page gives you access to the Microfiche Parts Catalog from which you should be able to select your rig.
The Winnebago online wiring and plumbing diagrams currently only go back as far as 1990, but if you contact Winnebago Owner Relations with your Winnebago serial number (not VIN) they may be able to provide you with information for your coach.

Looks like a good project. When ur ready - do a search here on Red Max Pro. It will bring your exterior paint back to life and give it a nice glossy finish.

The dorm fridge and microwave in the boxes came with it. That fridge is super small I really hope I can get the original working but if not I will do like you and put an inverter in to power it when on the road. Red max pro. Thanks for the tip I will try it when I get that far. I need to get ahead of any leaks that may be developing. I want to take my heat gun and putty knife and scrape the tar off the roof joint. I read that eternabond is good stuff for the roof-side joint and vents and AC unit. What should I use around the windows?

If that roof is EPDM (rubber)the tar has probably eat it up so be prepared to remedy that. Etherbond is great and polyurathane(comes in gun tubes) is best around the windows. Looks like a fun project. The engine makes it worth puting work in the coach.

My first mh, which I still have, has the 6.2L diesel. Much maligned but I've driven it about 30,000 miles over the years with no problems. Mine's in a 27' Winnebago Brave and got between 9-11 mpg going 55. The engine is still in good shape but the mh is getting too junky. I just bought a pretty nice '83 Vogue II and I hope to do a motor transplant with the addition of a banks turbo. See dieselplace.com if you need any advice on the engine.

Hi gusbratz, Have you had any time to work on it yet?
I am still slowly replacing my entire ceiling a panel at a time. Had to remove the cabinets to do it close to right. That was a real chore. They were held up by luck and rusty screws. Mostly luck.
Keep us posted with updates. I know weather makes a big difference on working time.
