Just got email about Pilot discounts and application to get card. Just wondering why they need my social security number. Always question giving out my SS #.

Go to the Pilot website and see if there is an application.
If you got an unsolicited email it could be a scam.

I have the Pilot/Flying J card and also did not/would not give my SS. I don't remember them asking. Are you sure the email is legit?
If you are considering giving it to them, which I think is a bad idea, I'd call them at their publicaly listed number and ask if they really sent the email and why the want it.
(On a side note... I've had my credit history locked at all the reporting agencies so getting my number wouldn't do them much good anyway.)

Never heard of camping clubs asking for an SS# just for you to sign up for a membership. If you really wanna sign up for the membership, I'd go with gbopp's suggestion: go to their website and sign up there. At least you can first see what are the benefits that you can get as well.

If you go to the Pilot online website, you can register and they do not ask for your SS number.

I remember when the police reommended engraving your SS # on tools and other "things" to help deter theft. My how times have changed. I had my SS# removed from my drivers license and I don't give it to anyone unless absolutely necessary. Especially a unsolicited mailing.

New RV card called RV plus but, it is not a credit card according to Pilot/Flying J it must be paid in full monthly. Good Sam members get .03 off per gallon, Deluxe members get .04 and Good Sam lifetime members get .08 off per gallon of Diesel. Gas discount is one cent less per gallon than diesel discount. The plus card can be used to activate and pay for fuel at the diesel truck lanes with no shutoff cap. Bad part is there is a $1000 a month cap unless signed up for autopay/autodebit then cap increases to $2500. You can also have two active cards which would double the limits.

That's definitely something other than the discount card I have. If you can charge to it I can see why they would want to do a credit check.
