I am new to RVing during winter. I am not sure is I can run the heater in my 5er while towing it. I do know it would be wise to shut it down while re-fueling. Can anyone help?

What purpose would running the furnace have, while towing. I certainly HOPE the trailer is not occupied while under way. While there is probably no real HARM other than it's unnecessary to heat an unoccupied space and will be costly as the furnace will likely run a much higher percentage of the time while underway, but you CERTAINLY would need to shut it off WELL before pulling into a gas station. Might get by with a tiny flame on a fridge but the one on your furnace is quite a LARGE flame.

I've done it when traveling to a destination where I know it will have to run 30 minutes or more to warm the TT up inside. No problem.

I can't do it on mine. The slide covers the main heat vents and you don't get enough air going through the system. The high temp limit switch then cuts it off.

But going down the road, you have a lot of air exchange going on. This is equivalent to camping on a really windy day; you get all of those drafts. So I think the furnace will have to run extra hard to try to keep up. I can understand wanting to get into a warm trailer. Been there.

I will offer a compromise. Barring any problem like mine, when you pull in to register, turn it on then. From the time you register to the time you get it on the site where you want it, leveled, stabilized, hooked to utilities, etc. is a good 20 to 30 minutes. In that time it will have warmed up a good bit.

Well, you'd certainly never find ME driving with anyone riding in the fiver, but it's certainly legal in quite a few states (including here in California).

There are even a handful of states that allow riding in travel trailers if you can believe that.

My furnace owner's manual says not to run the furnace while going down the road. BTW, the frig manual doesn't say that.

Once in a while we turn ours on when about 1-2 hours away from stopping.No big deal unless your slide blocks the vents.
