Lets play a game! In real life...one of the dogs pictured below is a 3 time Champion 1st place dog show winner....the other dog killed a child. You guess which one is which!

If you can't tell, and I can't tell, and my wife who has been an Animal Control Officer and Director of Animal Control for 30 years can't tell....do you think a RV Park owner is going to take a chance?

And the RV Park owner is restricted by his insurance carrier...he has to ban certain breeds to stay in business and still pay reasonable insurance rates.

My wife even says to me, as I'm typing this, that she can almost say she never met a dog she didn't like...but there were exceptions! But then again, she can look in most dogs eyes and see whay they're thinking.

But even she has been bit...a few times seriousily enough to be hospitalized. And she has the scars to prove it.

Never by a "Pit Bull", oddly enough.
Most times bit by...now get this...Chihuahua's! Little Ankle biters!

By the way..in case you wondered, the American Staffershire Terrier on the beach in the bottom picture was NOT the killer dog!

Some Common Insurance Companys, or city Banned dog lists could include any or all of the following, some States and Municipalities ban (for example)...Fairfield, Iowa where all dogs over 100 lbs are banned (St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, etc.)
AND...

Genetics IS a powerful thing that can be masked/controlled with good training but under the right amount of stress all dogs will revert instinct.

The biggest problem with the pit bull type dogs right now is that too many are being bred and worse still being bred by people who do not understand or care about genetics or the breed's instincts.

The popularity of this type of dog has led to the over population of this type of dog and the increase in events which have led to bans on these dogs. TV shows about these dogs only make this situation worse.

Popularity is the ruination of a breed.

Dogs that have been bred for generations to do a certain thing tend to do it. I know that Newfoundland dogs will pull people out of the water without being trained to do it, and a border collie mix that I once had tried to herd farm animals the first time he saw any, with no training. I believe that pit bulls were trained to fight in pits , and to win fights they had to ignore pain and hold on once they had their teeth in an opponent. That means that when one of them does become aggressive it can be more deadly than other dogs - it is very hard to get them to let go of a person or other dog once they have him/her in their jaws. I'm sorry, I love dogs, but I avoid pit bulls.

The breed was developed to be dog/animal agressive NOT human agressive.

Over the weekend my best friend's father in-law was celebrating his ninetieth birthday. To make it easy they all went out to dinner and came back to his house for cake, ice cream and to open birthday presents. While they were celebrating his birthday they heard gun shots. Well, what happen his next door neighbors had a drive by shooting.
While I was talking to my friend she said the neighbors have two pit-bulls for guard dogs that are either tied up or loose. We have to live in fear the dogs will crawl under the chain link fence. I told her they can crawl up a fence real easy. At this dog park in Palm Springs a pit-bull did climb a chain link fence and attacked a minpin. The injuries were pretty bad, but the dog did survive. The poor little thing had scares all over her body. It wasn't just one dog bite.

...Insurance Companies/underwriters place those restrictions due to statistics that show bites per breed and a list is compiled...

Nope the insurance companies were not the instigator of these breed bans. Dog bite statistics have been around for 'years' and the insurance company's did nothing with them.

It was the media that started it a few years ago with reporting these ever popular breed the pit bull in gangs and dog fighting. This was splashed all over the media ad nausem for months a few years back.....THEN PETA got involved and waged war about banning the pit bull, then banning other breeds and onto attacking/restricting owners of other breeds whether you could even HAVE a specific breed in your home, THAT is how the banned breed list orginated and THEN the insurance companies jumped on board from pressure from PETA lobbyists.

Those RV'ers that now can not take their pet camping with them have the media and PETA to thank. Instead of GOING AFTER gangs and dog fighting itself they chose to ban the breed involved. The perverbial get a foot in the door....left PETA getting breeds banned that have nothing to do with gang breeding and dog fighting.

we have had several breeds - never a PB, but only because they are powerful and I am not.

The one that was the biter/attacker was the Boston Terrier that I got from a rescue and had it shipped from Tx to SoCal. That dog never warmed up to my DH and one day tried to bite my 5 y/o son as my son sat on my lap. Dog jumped onto my lap and went for my sons face. Luckily, I was quick enough and pushed the dog down, but it could have been very bad. We found him a home with a single elderly woman who loved him to death and he was an "only child". He never had a single incident ever again. He died a natural death 7 years later.

This is def not to say that all BT's are bad, in fact, I would love to have another. I think whatever situation he was in before I got him, damaged him and I did not have the time or knowledge to get him beyond that damage.

Most small dog bites go unreported. Larger dogs generally do more damage and that gets reported. I don't want to argue the pit bull mentality, but I do know that the two we have had have been the most loving of any breed we have owned. By the way...fordsooperduty...that's one beautiful Am Staff on the beach there!

The pit bulls who scare me are being bred by people who DO understand the breed's instincts....then they try to enhance that :-( I'm talking about the tough guy in the 'hood with his Pit on a logging chain, swaggering down the street......

I totally agree with the sad statement about popularity - I was NOT happy about Aussies being admitted to the AKC a couple of decades ago - and now they're on a "banned" list :-(
