I like solar as much as anyone. One on my camper, which helps some, and 5K+ on my house, which helps a lot.
But helping to replace a diesel engine in a truck: not on this planet in my lifetime (if ever).
I honestly don't know what will eventually replace the internal combustion engine, or if that will happen in most of our lifetimes.
I do know that fuel prices will only go up, especially if we experience another Katrina-like natural disaster or continued increases in Middle Eastern instability. We are one calamity away from $5.00 (or more) per gallon gas prices, and when it occurs we will have to take alternative powered vehicles seriously.

I read China will take over as largest importer of oil within the next 18 months.
US demand may no longer dictate the price. Even with usage reduction here the price can still rise.
I got a better look today at the auto show. They basically dodged the towing question (implied it would be fine but wouldn't quote any numbers) and there is equipement that eats up the front of the truck bed so you lose hauling space.
