Quote: Just can't let this pass.... That's why our cars/toad are Subaru's. Excellent full-time AWD. Blizzak tires with take-off OEM wheels November to late April. May not have over 8" clearance as a 4x4 pickup, but sure goes through the snow. But then, this is a lousy (read hardly any) snow year.
LOL Our other "truck" is a '09 Subaru Forrester with studded tires for winter. Love that toy, goes just about anywhere!

Since you have Subaru TOADs. Can the new automatic Legacy be Flat Towed?

Quote: Brandon ,I have read many of the reports , I totally agree , it's pathetic . I am seriously considering pulling the TC's on both my GM's and doing the fix.
I've only read or heard of 1 or 2 (maybe 3) GM OEM-installed NP transfer cases in these Forums (transfer cases affected: model 136, 146, 246, 261, 261HD, 263HD, 263XHD, 261XHD) ever developing the rub-through problem.
There are literally thousands of Forum users who drive GMs with one of the above t-cases, and it is indeed rare that this problem develops (like playing Russian roulette, with 1 bullet in a several thousand chamber revolver).
My untested hypothesis is that the diesel engined 4x4 GMs will probably manifest the rub-through more rapidly per given mileage than a gasoline 4x4 equipped truck (i.e. far greater stress on the transfer case).
I had a 2006 Subaru Forester. With snow tires (General Altimax Arctic) the thing was a snowmobile with heat. Unfortunately, the wife had too much trouble getting in and out of it so I traded it for a 2011 F-150 4x4. I spend most of the winter in 2wd - the truck weighs 6260 lbs. and feels much more solid in deep snow than the Sube. We both love it.
BUT: I would never buy a 4x2 truck up here because they have virtually no resale value. It may be a perception issue, but it's real.

One trend I've noticed on this forum is that most of the trucks are low mileage. The transfer cases tend to wear through at 100k+ miles. Look at the GM truck specific sites and you'll find a lot more higher mileage trucks.
Here's another youtube video of an actual failed case, it's on a K1500 (no diesel of course) with 200k miles according to the description.

That's because this is a TC forum , go to some of the GM truck forums and you can add some zeros to the 2 or 3 you have read or heard of.

There would be no better Forum on the Internet to discover drive-train issues under a pick-up truck than the truck camper (and tow vehicle) Forum I find (and I have frequented the Diesel Place Forum {VerticalScope Inc} for years) that the Posters over there utilize their pick-ups for vastly different purposes (and rarely if ever have I read of a member hauling payload like a truck camper)...
I think our pick-up truck usage has more in common with the RV user environment. I'l hazard a guess and say that there are at least ~~ 800 members on the Truck Camper and Tow Vehicless Forums alone with GM SUVs and pick-ups (many of which are using the same transfer case in question).

Are we to conclude from this that if you load your truck up with a heavy camper or tow a heavy trailer we will have LESS trouble with the transfer case ?

I'm assuming you mean Subarus. At this point, the DW is in love with her F150. She named it "The Baby". She is no longer able to drive but it's her truck and she reminds everyone of that.
