My 2006, Class'A' on the Ford F53, V10 w/5 Speed Tranny uses ONLY 'MotorCraft Mercon 'SP' tranny fluid, according to the manual. Its not available in regular Auto parts stores. I must order & go get it from a Ford dealer 20 miles away.
Is there a substitute fluid thats available at most Auto parts stores?

Duh, you already said it's not available in local auto parts stores so I think you already answered your own question.

O'Riley's has the Mercon SP fluid.
If you drain the fluid at the drain plug, you will need 8 qts to refill the trans.

EIGHT quarts? My manual specifies 17.7 Yeah....8 quarts at the drain plug...but what about the remaining 9.7?

What is the advantage of swapping out 8 quarts and leaving the rest in? Go to a garage and have them ump out the old and pump in the new. (Special machine just for that)

Better than not doing it. No?
You can drain 8qts, drive around the block and drain the fluid again. Then refill.

I was a Ford tech for 25 years and in the past five years, I have seen many trans failures due to improper trans flushing done by inexperienced mechanics.

ech tips

Approval to Service ALL 5R110 Automatic Transmissions with MERCON® LV

Beginning immediately ALL (2003 to 2010 MY) 5R110 automatic transmissions can be serviced with MERCON® LV automatic transmission fluid in place of MERCON® SP.

Initially only the 2009/10MY 5R110 automatic transmissions were filled and serviced with MERCON® LV. In an effort to reduce complexity, Ford Motor Company is allowing all previous model year 5R110 automatic transmissions to be serviced with MERCON® LV automatic transmission fluid. This pertains to top off as well as fluid replacement. Mixing of MERCON® LV and MERCON® SP in the 5R110 transmission is acceptable. Extensive testing has been performed to insure there are no functional or durability concerns with the use of MERCON® LV in the 5R110 automatic transmission.

Vehicles affected are F-Series Super Duty trucks (including chassis cab, motorhome, LCF).

Motorcraft MERCON® LV is now available in three sizes:
Part Number: XT-10-QLVC - 1 quart
Part Number: XT-10-DLV - 55 gallon drum
Part Number: XT-10-BLV - Bulk

Note - I could locate an "official" Ford type document where that came from.

Search my posts for a good external filter replacement too.

And to really muddy up the waters, the spec now calls for MERCON LV, the latest and greatest Ford transmission fluid.
