I have a 4000w Onan with one 15000 A/C unit, and it will run everything,(microwave, fireplace, ect.)no problem, ours is propane, which I like for the fact,I can store it for 6 mo.s,push the button and I've got power,no gas cans,or sludged up carb.,very reliable, but it all depends on how you will use yours.I fire mine up for an hour or two in the late morning, same in early evening, use my power, and charge the batteries and go most of the summer on one 40lb bottle.

Very good information - gives us lots to think about. Propane was not evena option we were thinking about...but now its on the list.
Its logical to use propane.
The Honda genny was in our discussion (even though I didn't post about portable) for other usages away from the RV.
I like the idea of starting the power source from inside.
We will also look at the various cost difference.
Thanks everyone for the good straight talk.

I use a built in 4k ONAN in my TT and the 5er. It will run a 15K A/C and the microwave at the same time. If you were going to add a second A/C I would opt for the 5.5K unit. They do make a smaller unit 2.8K gas and 2.5K propane that will run a A/C or a microwave but not both at the same time.

I bought a used Onan Microlite 4000. Runs everything I want and I have less than 1K in all of it.
Works great for me.

with the starting switch. Just not sure which model - gas or diesel - and enough power to run air and micro, -not at the same time though.
What is your recommendation or what are you using?
Thx
Don't forget that the Onan is a straight generator and runs at idle or at full RPM. You put one watt of load on it and it will run wide open, burning fuel. Personally, I'm a huge fan of inverter-style generators, that only run fast enough for the load demanded. Much more efficient and tend to be quieter, overall. Again, my personal preference would be a diesel, to match my truck, but I have no problem carrying extra gas cans for a gasser.

there is no idle on the onan. You start it and it runs at a constant optimum speed - which doesn't happen to be wide open.
I'm a fan of the inverter style generators as well, but they have their own issues such as spikes from the AC. A lot of reports that they don't react fast enough to handle the AC cycles and they shut down.

I have a 5500 gasoline factory installed in mine. It has a 9 gallon marine tank, and I carry spare 9 gallon marine when I am in a place without electrical hookups. It runs the A/C, microwave, 2 TV's, satellite receivers without any issues and has yet to miss a beat. Push the start button inside when we need it, and come sin handy on the road for heating lunch in the microwave, and running the A/C when it is hot outside. I was looking at LP, but went with gasoline, gasoline tanks can be swapped in minutes, easy to find gasoline, and I don't have to yank a propane tank out to run to town with for a refill.
