My DH and I are taking our DS on a college visit to North Carolina State University in early April. We need a full-hookup campsite large enough for our 41 foot fiver with five slides. I'm not sure if we're coming directly from home (in NY) or from Martinsville, VA (we may go to the NASCAR race), but I DO know that from Raleigh we're heading down to Myrtle Beach. Any suggestions for a campground in the Raleigh area?

The best one is at the North Carolina State fairgrounds. About $25/night with full hook ups. Just about 4 miles from NCSU, down Hillsboro St under the beltline, towards CARY. They have several sections available. The best section is the new area, Gate 'H6' next to the horse complex. You should ask for this area. It is the most quiet area. Because it is away from the highways and away from the train tracks.

Spacious sites, and not really very crowded, unless they are having a big event. Very good 24hr security.

This is the best camping place around Raleigh.

The other option is for Falls Lake State Park. Further away by some 12 miles, North. And they lock the gates at 8:00PM. With you either in or out.

North Carolina State Fair grounds can handle your rig and they are very reasonable price wise. There web address is ncstatefair.org; phone number for campground reservation is 919-612-6767, which is security and I think you make reservations through them. Rates are real high, ha ha $25 per night. By the way they are close to NC State and do not have gate closing like state parks. Lots of eating places close by. I live close to the area and would not mind camping there myself if I was coming into town. Good luck and let me know how it goes.Campground address is 1025 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC

Thank you for your replies thus far. I will check out all of the recommendations made. I won't be able to make reservations anywhere until I know exactly what dates we will be in the area, so I have some time to check things out.

I just checked out the NC State Fairgrounds and that looks like a definite possibility. They don't take advance reservations except for groups, so I'll call and see if they think we'll have trouble getting a spot at that time of year.

The Fairgrounds will be your best bet. The location can't be beat for touring NC State.

You really don't need to worry about it. With the addition of the upper camping area in addition to the original area at the back of the horse complex there is tons of spots all full hook up. Even during state fair time we have always been able to get a spot by just showing up. It's a nice place too

Another vote for the Fairgrounds. The NCSU football stadium, Carter-Finley, and the basketball arena, RBC Center, are near there with the campus being a few miles away. Hope your son enjoys his visit and becomes a Wolfpacker!

I would definitely go to the NC State Fairgrounds. We had to live there for a month back in 2010 while repairs were being made to our house in Raleigh.
Go to the new area behind the Horse Arena off of Trinity Rd. They have a whole new section up there with gravel pads and 50 amp hookups and water. Stay on the end near the forest because the sites are more level on that end. In April, you should not have to worry about getting a spot up there. I do not believe they take reservations though. You also could not ask for a more convenient location to NC State as access to Western Blvd is right down the street.
Good luck and pm if you have any more questions.
