the etrex is a good starter unit for sure. You'll have fun with it. I sold it to a club member a while back and he's still figuring out how to use it!

Heck, I have had mine for about 5 years and still don't know much about it.
Screen is a bit small for these "old eyes" and might get replaced soon.

Can't comment on the Oregon. I replaced my etrex with the 76CSX. It comes on sale at West Marine a few times a year for 179.95. That's when I snagged mine. The 76 and 60 are the most popular amongst the D37 Dual Sport crowd. Since it has a memory card you can store a TON of tracks/waypoints whereas the etrex is limited.

What is it that you want to do with it?

Ditto on the 60 and 76, lots of memory, I believe both are older units and a 62 and 7? are the newer models.

Garmin Oregon is now the Montana and has bigger screen and a camera built in.

Love my Oregon, easy to use and full color 3d mapping and did I say it is easy to use? DW can even walk up and use it without a problem.

It's like an iphone or droid, easy to use

oh yeh

ITS EASY TO USE

and well worth the extra bucks because it's.... yeah Easy to Use!

Garmin Rino looks good. A lil spendy though!! Keep the suggestions coming.
Nayther, I plan on tagging cool spots that we discover on the trail, being able to tag and send to friends. Basically another hobby to track our activities.
Thanks,
Brooks

I started with a Lowrance Baja 540 that I mounted in the Rhino. I quickly realized that this was not going to work. I sold the Baja and got a handheld and while it was convienent to carry, the screen was just too small and the controls generally suck. Thankfully Amazon allowed me to return the handheld.

One day shopping at Costco, I came across a Garmin Nuvi 1490t and I was sold. For $149, I got a 4.3" screen with 24k topo maps. I purchased a Ram Mount for the Rhino and my quad.

So what did I get for $150 bucks?

  1. A car navigation system for the truck that does not have a factory navigation system
  2. A UTV navigation system
  3. Even works great for hiking!

The Ram Case I purchased is water proof so that solves the only issue some may have with getting such a unit.

If you need something to track your running, etc. Get an iPhone with the Nike+ app and that solves 3 problems; having a phone, having your tunes, and tracking your excersize.

What's work? Oh, playing in the sand in the Southwest!

I had an Oregon 550t, upgraded to the Montana. All the Garmin units are fairly expensive but are the best.

What I like about the setup I have too is that once I get back from a trip, I can download the tracks right in to Google Earth. In Google Earth, I can create a fly-over of the tracks (rides) we took to get an idea of what we missed, elevation, etc.

Here is a short ride we did to a mine on January 28. CLICK TO WATCH VIDEO

Another cool thing is that I can reverse the process. I can create tracks in Google Earth and import them directly to the Garmin. I get not only the actual route but also 3D satellite images so I can compare things should something not add up or I want to deviate from the route.

Keep it simple when selecting a GPS unit and make sure it fits the intended purpose as close as possible.
