For traveling in groups FRS/GMRS radios have replaced CB -- less foul language and higher quality audio. Beyond that, cell phones have pretty much replaced CB.

The FCC solicited comments a little over a year and a half ago about making changes to the service but then decided to leave it alone. One of the big problems with it is the number of people using illegal amps and the natural phenomenom of skip.

I removed mine at the end of last season. I don't think I turned it on a single time last year. Just don't see the need for it.

I have a CB installed but seldom use it. Too much nonsense on channel 19. I use it like said during traffic problems for information. Sometimes I leave it on but adjust the squelch so the only transmissions I hear are from someone extremely close. That way if someone at your back door tries to hail you, it will come through.

Supposedly the RVers channel is 13 but I have never found another RVer on air. It would be great if other RVers monitored the airwaves, so we could share info and say hello.

Ours saved us possible damage when a trucker told us a rear jack on our M/C trailer had dropped down and was dragging on blacktop. Also very useful in traffic backups.

Have a CB on my motorcycle but not in the truck (yet). Riding around I listen to the semis but it is usually quiet unless there is a wreck or the like. More radio traffic on the open interstate. I leap-frogged with some semis on I-40 from Albuquerque to Flagstaff one time and we BS'd the whole way; helped the time go by.

Required equipment for our Jeep club and most member's tow rigs have one installed so I put one in the MH. I run Uniden 520XL Pro in both my Jeeps, truck/camper and the Alpine.

They're reasonably priced, have very good reception/output and are rugged. The 520 has ANL and RF gain, and no useless (for the trail) addons.

Don't really turn it on much unless I'm traveling with a group. Makes it nice for coordinating fuel stops etc.

Our daughter and son-in-law gave us one for Christmas for the RV. Haven't used it yet. We had one about 30 years ago and it was a blast back then. Sounds like they're not so popular anymore, but it seems like they could be helpful in certain situations. They bought us a Cobra. May daughter said it had good ratings when she compared brands.

I have a Midland CB in my Jeep. Most clubs REQUIRE one for trail runs!
A couple years ago, I took the tests and became a General Class Amateur Radio Operator, so I also have a 2-meter rig in the Jeep. It works much better than CB!

I also have a CB walkie talkie... and... I carry a 2m Handi talkie.
( KD4ZXZ )
I seldom use either unless there is a traffic snarl or standstill...
