I've not hidden the fact that I like the EcoBoost idea -- I think it is a good one, and obviously, so do a lot of people based on the success they have been sales wise. I hope they prove themselves reliable. I'm a little disappointed that the fuel mileage hasn't turned out to be a great as advertised, and they seem to need some PCM tweaks. Still a good idea though, at least in theory. A few years of use will show if the execution is as good as the idea was.

The MPG should improve if they'd start with a few more liters to make the 3.15:1 axle adequate. MPG WILL improve when buyers start doing Bell Tech lowering kits. Ideally, 3" all around. MPG WILL also improve when buyers slow down, and stop enjoying the power when not towing up a grade.

One thing is for sure, it will help out Ford's CAFE numbers, 3.7 is rated at 23 mpg, and the ecoboost at 22. If they could get the F 150 on a diet, those EPA numbers would improve.

And you don't have to be Larry. But some people out there obviously don't mind, so more power to them.

I've seen probably 30 Ecoboost F-150's on the highway in the last year, and the only hauling I've seen them doing is hauling a$$. Why does everyone assume 100% of Eco's sold are going to be driven off the lot and immediatly hitched up to a 13K 5er?

I'd guess the percentage of Eco's towing TT's with any frequency is 1 tenth of 1%. Of course that's a wild guess, but I bet it's not too far off.

I agree. This is what I posted on another thread and you argued with me.

"They (Ford) know the vast majority of owners are using the F150 as grocery getters, with the occasional load of mulch."

Now I guess you agree after all.

I also post the very same thing in the other EB thread. I have said it here also just some people can't understand that.

Don

Don, are you saying that most people won't tow much of the time with the EcoBoost?

If you are then does it (EB) not make sense?

You can have a truck that if driven with a light foot gets very good mileage for a full size truck

BUT
for the rare times you tow or carry a heavy load, you have the power to do it..

The alternative is waht I did.
Buy a heavy F250 V10 with the juice to pull my fiver.
Run it over 11 years to over 200,000 kilomets. Tow only about 50,000 of those kilometers.
Use it as my daily driver and just keep buying the gas.

Ya, an EcoBoost really makes sense compared to a v10 F250 if it will tow what ya got..
(Not saying EB would tow my trailer)

To the OP--
this thread may go on forever, be proud of your fishing skills

BIL has a new F150 with the 5.0, traded from his 98 F150 with the 5.4. He said the power difference is night and day. Loves the new truck, has not towed with it yet.
My son has towed with his ecoboost and he says the power difference is night and day companred to his old 5.0. He even let me drive it and all I can say it that it stands up and goes when you punch it. Impressive for what it is. And the Ford coast to coast torture test followed by the Baja run was super impressive. They put it through the hoops.

I cannot help smiling when I read the 'tow vehicle' forum.

Firstly there are thousands of posts that rightly advise that when considering weight ratios TT to TV, always allow for some 'spare capacity.'

Now we have a culture growing re. the Ecoboost engine strength that is advising the opposite in terms of 'spare engine strength' when towing a TV?
These Ecoboost (only 3.5L) engines are useless without the TURBO when towing.
So that inherently means that the turbo is probably running at near 100% output most of the time the TV is pulling a TT.

I predict that this time next year on this forum.........

'Read all about it......Ecoboosts Turbos begin to fail!'

I await the first posting on here, of how some one limped along over hills and down dales with a FAILED TURBO and a 3.5L engine struggling to get them home????

I don't know how many turbocharged vehicles Ford sells each year, but think it is in the thousands. My brother had a gas turbocharged Fiesta that was going 149 MPH on the autobond back in the late 80's.

I don't hear any problems so far, but there is 8 more months to go.

And the Ecoboost have been out more than 1 year now, with production over 1,000,000 Ecoboost engines expected to be built in 2012, with double that number once the plants in other parts of the world start up production in 2013. Yes they will be building about 750,000 1 liter 120 HP Ecoboosts each year two new engine plants. None coming to America though. We will keep getting the 1.6L, 2L and 3.5L for now, and I am expecting a slightly larger version for the F-350 to come out at some point.

With CNG running a mere $2.30 a gallon right now, I expect that many cities will be converting their diesel fleet to F-650's and F-750's that are $7,500 less expensive and able to use the much lower cost fuel too!

it's aliiiive! i'm reviving this bada$$ troll thread with some actual real world experience...

Spent the weekend driving with the family up Northern Quebec, through some pretty steep hills on the way there, all the while behind my brother in law's F-150 EB towing a 6700lb rig.

Both had cruise on through the hills and every time he would pull away on me when the downshifts occurred. Mind you, he downshifted into 4th and even 3rd sometimes, but this thing has torque enough to impress me.

Durability is anyone's guess, but the initial impression I have is that Ford's done a fantastic job of beefing up the 1/2 market and stealing some sales from everyone else.

Now have some popcorn and watch the show.

Well the Ecoboost has been out well over a year now, and still hear no whining about failed engines yet.
