After all who can afford to buy a compass or would consider carrying such a large and heavy device in their RV? Much better to rely on an inexpensive laptop or smart phone which are more reliable as they are battery powered.

I set my azimuth and tilt then put it in a LEVEL tripod. I generally have a pretty good idea where north is. Just rotate it until you get a signal, then fine tune the adjustments. Hardly takes more than 10 minutes to get a 90+ signal. No fancy pants, high dollar gizmos needed.

If you don't have a compass, look around the park and see where everyone else's dish is pointed. Works every time for me :-)
X2 on that. Or I just look at the sun. Rises in the east and sets in the west. Gives a good indication of where south west is.

I have ditched the compass and level for the combo set in Android EasyTools. just sit it on top of my tripod. Get the settings from Android Satellite Finder.

That said I have three compasses and even more levels along with me scattered about. I also printout expected settings before I hit the road. One way or another, I'm covered. It's the beer I'm worried about.

Note to 2oldman, elkhornsun was kidding.

At least we have moved away from sextants and star shots.

I must be technologically challenged. I don't use a phone app, or computer or printer.

I just use the signal strength meter that is built in to my Dish Network receiver. Punch in the location Zip Code and set Azimuth and skew then aim South and go from there.

Works every time.

This gets a bit tedious when your dish is 150' away.
