I was curious I have to replace my ACEs windshield, tree.branch, is there a quality or price difference between going to a dealer or an RV glass specialist like Duncan Glass? Anyone have experience here?
We've had to have the windshield replaced on our MH a couple of times. The insurance company sent a glass replacement company to our location both times to do the replacement. Both times we had excellent service, no leaks or other problems.
The ins. co. never mentioned taking it to a dealer, so IMHO dealerships probably don't do glass replacement.
Do you have glass replacement as part of your insurance? if yes, what does the ins. co. say?
Dealers, I would guess, simply drive the mh to their "favorite" glass replacement store.
I've had my windshield replaced (once) buy the dealer or purchase when the motorhome was about a year old....I got the feeling it was a "game" they played with the insurance company (how much deductable+ how much for the windshield)...the the next time, at a glass place....they told me the price first, then they got ahold of the insurance company.
Both times, however, the job was done right...and no problems.
Most will contract out. Just better business cost not having to keep a trained crew on payroll. Also consider the material costs they would have to warehouse.

We can say for a Motorhome, as we have never needed to replace a Motorhoe Front Windshielf. But we did have to replace a Front Windshile, On our PSD Truck, thanks to a Lousy Golfer, as we live right across the stret from the 4th fairway on the Golf Coarse, and I don't even play Golf. I called Ford, than a local shop in town. The local shop was more than 50% cheaper for the replacement Galll, wiht Labor. I also asked them about tour Motorhoome also, asked Ford at the same time. The Loacl Glass Shop can do if for a whole lot less. It really does spay to shop around. And the Glass I got for our PSD Truck, was OEM Ford Glass. Unless you request cheaper glass, this Local Glass Shop always uses OEM Replacement Glass. There is quite a big differance between a Local Glass Shop, compaired to using a Ford Shop or any other Major Dealer Type Shop, or any RV Glass Replacement Places. So if or when thhat time ever comes our way, we already knnow where we will have our Motorhomes Windshield done at. It ereally does pay to shop around. We might concider a second hand Front Windshield from an RV Wrecking Yard if only we had any, any where even close to us, which we don't. Good Luck. Happy Travels, Dan & Jill
The reason it costs 50% more, is they have to pay one of their employees to drive your vehicle to the glass shop, to have the professionals replace it, then drive it back...............plus , make a profit.
That is why the dealer charges more. Think about it.
And I would NEVER consider a "Second Hand" windshield.......it will prob. get damaged, during take off, put on, and unless they Guarentee a New Replacement if it breaks (which they won't ) you will be throwing your money away.
Glass windshiels are not at all like , fenders, hoods, etc..............

No dealer has to take a RV to a Glass shop. Glass shops all have mobile trucks. We do NOT replace windshields due to our hourly labor rate and the fact that you need a skilled professional to replace a windshield. It may not seem like it but replacing a motorhome windshield takes more skill and at least 2 people (sometimes 3 on 1 piece windshields), to correctly replace. Dealers that do windshields probably have no close local glass shop to do the work. Doug
