Anyone ever install a gas can holder in the bed under the TC "wings" and have some spare for emergencies? It measures just about right for a five gallon can in each wheelwell.
It's a hassle to get to, but if you're outta gas somewhere, would sure be nice. But I wonder if odor of gas would permeate the TC?
Also, what about on the rear TC step bumper? (Is that a legal issue? Dangerous?) That would be a danger for collision, I guess, but wonder about odor rotating into the TC with that slipstream effect behind the TC while driving.
Seen alot folks mounting cans on rear of campers, most on wall. Have seen a few nice ones.
In bed I'm not sure-limited air -with sparky elctronic thingies near by? Depends on cans, all mine leak/fume to some degree. Its more difficult legally now but how about an extended or auxillary truck. mounted tank.
Seems though someone might build custom side tanks-know full frontal ones are.
Got a couple of these rotopax 2 gallon tanks mounted on side of TC inside the truck bed. The special mount keeps the tanks from tipping over and has a lock to prevent theft. Can mount tanks on my ATV when on a long ride.
I don't have a TC but, I wouldn't drive around with 5 gallons of gas in a loose can. I know many do with no problems, but it's not for me.
I make sure I don't get low on gas.
Back in the early 70's I had 2 special built tanks (25 gal ea) made to fit in front of the wheel wells under the TC wings. I had a selector valve that chose between the 3 tanks.
The toughest part was refueling, tho' not that difficult. the vents were extended out beyond the TC. The tanks were welded aluminum so, sparking from striking was eliminated......
Worked for me and they are still in use by a heavy equipment operator.
The OP asked about installing a holder to mount a gas can. We're not talking about a "loose can" in the bed. In reality though, a 5 gallon "Jerry can" that can fit in that area ahead of the wheel well with your camper will probably be held securely enough without a holder.
I got used to carrying a 5-gal. Jerry can in the bed under the wing many years ago when the truck I was using at the time had a much smaller fuel capacity, and I would occasionally find myself in areas where Diesel fuel wasn't readily available. Or at least it wasn't KNOWN to be readily available to me, since that was before the days of smart phones and Gas Buddy app's. It got used a couple of times, too.
Even though the two tanks on my current truck hold a combined 65 gallons, I just can't bring myself load the camper without putting my "last resort" fuel can in the bed first. A 20 liter NATO fuel can fits perfectly in that area, and no holder is needed to keep it stationary. And, I don't keep anything else there so why not?
As for odors, leaking and dangers: If you get a real NATO Jerry can, not one of those crummy Blitz knock-offs, you shouldn't have to worry about that because the NATO cans don't leak as long as the cap seal is in good shape. NATO can construction is different from the Blitz cans, and it makes them more rugged and leak-resistant.
As you may already know however, it's almost impossible to find an old-style Jerry can that doesn't have all that CARB junk on it and paying through the nose to boot. But, if you're interested I can show you where you can find Swiss Army surplus 20 liter "Utility Cans" that are in good shape, and you can put whatever you want in them. I can also show you where you can find Jerry can spouts for a reasonable price. The place that sells the cans also has surplus spouts of a design I haven't seen before, but they cost more than the cans.
Thanks for the link bobndot. I see they have a gas tank that replaces a 30lb propane tank, interesting. http://www.transferflow.com/generator_tank.html
I just purchased original NATO fuel cans which are lined inside and use the ss spout. They are 20 liter OD color from Deutsche Optik, 321 S. Main St Yerington, NV 89447. 800-225-9407 WWW.deutscheoptik.com They run about $49.00 or a special when buying a set of four. Their ad was in the December NRA mag
