Although I've never really thought too deeply about it, now that it's mentioned, I too came away from the grounds with an unusual feeling; serenity? peacefulness? I don't know, but very powerful. I've visited numerous Civil War battlefields in the east, and the "feel" is different; no less sacrosanct, but different.
I can relate. I was a Civil War reenactor for many years. Here in the south, many of us pay tribute to the thousands of boys who fought for what they believed in just as the warriors that fought Custer. I have walked every major Civil War battlefield and am moved each time I walk those grounds. I must say though, there are only two places I have a profound emotional reaction and that is at The Little Big Horn field and Gettysburg. I suppose the inner feelings of each of us are brought on by our own individual understanding of what happened on those fields of death.
I can't wait to visit this Battlefield . It sounds like they have a nice museum with a lot of artifacts. Some of the previous post suggests a big battlefield . I might take three or four days on
this one.
Captain crunch; you won't need that much time to visit the battlefield. We did the audio tour and museum in one day. However, if you have the time, I'd spend a couple of days and listen to the ranger lectures, take long walks over the parts of the field allowed and visit the nearby area for a more full observation of what happened. You won't be sorry.

I think 3 or 4 days here would be way more than you need. Although the battlefield is fairly large, it's long and essentially runs over several ridges. Some of it actually crosses reservation and, IIRC, visitors are asked not to walk in those areas. It is a driving tour by nature of its length, with multiple stops at significant points, and some areas with a walking path. I really didn't notice many people very far off the path. At any rate, scheduling a full day would probably do you well, and give you plenty of time. Again, I think the audiotour CD is well worth the money.
