I'm still in lost territory.

I've tried uninstall, and new download of FF 11. I read through what I think are all the settings and can't see any reason why the FF on my pc won't create bookmarks.

I went to the FF help files. & did the copy profile to memory stick. Then followed the suggestion of pasting that back to the profile location on my pc.

NO CHANGE.

Yet, as I said, I tried creating bookmarks in Opera and can do that. But Opera is way too slow for any long term use on my slow rural connectivity. & Opera has no add bloc.

What can be wrong.
- Is it a setting in Firefox?
- Is it a bug some where on my computer?

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

It sounds like your bookmarks file is corrupted and until it is fixed you wont be able to add to the file.

The .json files are used by Firefox. They are not readable text. If you export to an html file it is readable text with the normal html tags what make anchor tags display as links, create blocks or paragraphs, etc.

You need to export your bookmarks from one of the files to an HTML file.

This might sound like a very very crazy way to fix your bookmarks, but it works. It is likely you may lose some of your bookmarks as there is some syntax error regardless. But it should get back most of your favorites in the order they were.

- Download and install KompoZer (an free html editor)
- Drag/Drop your bookmarks HTML file onto the desktop icon created by the Kompozer installation (this will open Kompozer and load the bookmarks file).
- make any change to the file (change a letter and change it back or even a carriage return to the end of a line) and save the file to force it to rewrite the file.

The reason this works is Kompozer fill force the file to the proper syntax. The new file can then be imported into your bookmarks and replace the entire bookmarks file.

Then open Firefox and try to add a new bookmark.

I can't see any of the bookmarks at all. I can't see any record of where I've been in history. FF won't save any new bookmarks.

When I do back up bookmarks, I get those same 10 dates as in the profile. But FF gives me an unable to perform error message.

I thought you meant to go to the files I find in the profile I located with "%appdata%". Trouble is I can't find that going through Explore on my pc. I can find "AppData" right below my name as pc owner. But when I click on that I don't find anything that would lead me to the profile.

Still flumoxed.

If your file is corrupt this does not surprise me.

Try opening Firefox and enter about:support on the URL line.

Then in the first section Application Basics click the Open Folder button. This should put you in the profile folder or 1 directory deeper. If 1 directory deep, you should be able to navigate up 1 level. This is where you should see the Bookmark files with the .json extension.

However, the .json file isnt going to do you much good.

I think if you go thru the process of the export to an HTML file even though you dont see any bookmarks, it may still produce a corrupt html file. This file may be fixable using KompoZer.

If you go thru the process and see an HTML file you save of 150K or so, you should be able to salvage most of your bookmarks.

Thank you and saying my prayers.

Would you be a bit more specific about exporting to an HTML file.

I'm assuming you mean from the folder in the profile on my computer. I may have done this some time or other, but likely 10 years ago.

Also, I might mention that there's a web location that opens a live cam in windows media player for viewing. These past few days it won't run in windows media player. Could it be related? Link is: http://www.psnh.com/Environment/Osprey-Online.aspx. Then in middle column 4th paragraph, the is in the words "Osprey Cam". Just wondering.

Exporting bookmarks to an HTML file.

Select bookmarks/Show all bookmarks
Select Import/Export bookmarks
Select Export bookmarks to HTML

You will get a default location and default bookmarks.html file name - you can accept both - just note where it is saved.

This file will open in your FF browser or IE or any other browser for that matter. If you open this file you can go to the bottom and see what the last bookmark saved was.

===

My observations with Osprey.

When I click the link I was asked what action to apply. I selected open in Windows Media Player which prompted me to download/install WMP 11. Well, I dont want to do that. I use an older version for better control.

I elected to save the file and it was saved as PSNHOspreyCam128.asx in my downloads default directory.

I dragged/dropped it into my WMP icon and it seemed to take about 15 seconds to start but then played just fine.

Well, will wonders never cease.

Long about Apr 23 or 24 I came home and read on this thread and downloaded KompoZer and about that point thought 'brain not really alert now' and quit.

& sometime or other, FF12 showed up and said: "do you want to install". I left it. Now, tonight I thought shut down, restart and let the computer do some self maintenance.

& as I restarted FF and keyed in urls I've 'learned by repetition', I saw that the history was giving me options from the url frame. Ok, can I create a bookmark....... Yes, I can. Try import.

Voila, did KompoZer do what was needed up to the point of restarting the computer?

& yes, very nice to have the bookmarks back.

Thanks for all the help.

Do you still have your old computer running? You can get your Firefox profiles and bookmarks from that computer with MozBackup - free from Mozilla. It will let you choose what you want to copy. Run this on the old computer. Get a backup and then restore it to Firefox on your new computer. This should overwrite your current bookmarks file which seems to be corrupt and stopping your FF from working as it should.

Another solution is this does not work as is. Find a copy of FF10 (which was on your old computer) - do the above, restore the backup to FF10 on the new computer - then update FF to FF11. All should be carried forward and work as it should. Google Firefox 10 - some server must have a copy for download on it.
