I brother in law owns a detail shop that gets truck in from an auto wholesaler. They buy diesel trucks from the oil rigs. I would never buy an oil rig truck!!WOW are they driven hard and never put away. I'm amazed the work my brother in law puts in because when he is done the truck looks nothing like what he started. However, a polished turd is still a turd.

Bought a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD about 1.5 years ago, beautiful looking truck, with just over 100,000kms on it (so...60K miles??). Two weeks later I noticed that the transmission started slipping. Two more weeks later...I dropped $4800 to have it re-built as it would barely move.
Thankfully, I managed to sell the truck before anything else came up....and I broke even. Phew...that one nearly cost me my 2nd wife!

Was there anything else wrong with the truck? A bum tranny does not make a bum truck but with only 60k the tranny failure is interesting.
Thanks!

2 years ago I bought a 99 F-250 7.3 with 165,000 on it. The guy I got it from had a record of every maintanance ever done to it. All the maintanace done was normal fluid changes, batteries, tires and brakes. In the 2 years I owned it I rebuilt the rear axle ( cost me $250.00 ), replaced the factory shocks, 1 brake caliper, and the under valve cover wiring harnesses. I would still have the truck today if things in life didnt change and cause me to downsize.
Nobody ever just posts that their truck is doing fine on these forums without someone asking. That's why you see trucks with what seems to be a high rate of failure. My truck is running perfect just hit 101,000. You can research the 6.0 Ford, then go out and see that there are about 2 of them on the road for every other make.
My truck is doing fine, I turned over 120,000 on my last trip to Tennessee towing my fiver. the latest oil analysis gives a clean bill of health on the engine, no antifreeze in the oil, no water in oil either. The longer I own it, the better it runs.

Hey bought this used 7 year old Ford truck last year. First it needed to have "fuel tank" filled with diesel. I have had to add diesel several times since I bought it! Then after 5000 miles needed an "oil change"! Old oil looked pretty oily to me, but hey that Mechanic Guy needed braces for his kid I guess.... Oh and what really chapped me was it was only 7 years old and needed "windshield wiper blades"! It's been nothing but trouble....

Come to think of it. I bought my 97 f150 last February, I constantly have to put gas in it and change the oil every 4-5 k miles too!. I had to replace the battery!!!!!!! This crazy thing called an "idler pulley" started squeaking so I went to my local auto parts store and that thing cost me $26.00!!!!!!
Now I need to change spark plugs, replace the windshield wipers, and I think my shocks are bad. Lol. What a piece of junk, it oly has about 175k on it.
To the OP. While "stuff happens" and there are probably folks out there that had serious issues with a used diesel pickup, except for the guy with 2006 Ram that had the tranny take a dump, most posts are describing minor problems and routine maintenance.
I think you could safely draw the conclusion that with a little study, a thorough mechanical inspection, and a good eye, you could find a used truck that works for you and would provide reliable service. If you're so inclined, happy hunting!
