We are planning to visit the Outer Banks in early May. Can anyone give an idea to how full the national and state parks are during that period and can you get a travel trailer on the ferry to Okracoke.

Sorry if this is very base..
No State Parks, but the NPS operates something like 4 campgrounds, no hook-up's & cold showers, no reservations that I know of either, they are FCFS...
The Ferry to Ocracoke does indeed accept RV's of pretty much any size & configuration.
If you feel you need a reservation there are several commercial campgrounds throughout the island...

Everyone knows how I feel. It is our National Treasures, Parks, Beaches etc. We should not be paying to use them again. Special interest want to limit or eliminate access or use to just them or no one at all.
The Mass Beach Buggy Association is one of the leading conservation groups in this state.
Do you not understand that when a campground is built they tear down trees, flatten hills, and tap into water supplies? How about the roads you drive on to get to said campground? Gas and oil consumption, hmmmm? Driving on the beach when done correctly does not damage the beach save for a few ruts here and there. And then a good n'oreaster fills 'em back up again. Any reputable beach runner stays off the dunes and out of nesting areas. And quite often at least part of the funds stay on the beach and help with upkeep and restoration.

RV-less for now but our spirits are still on the open road.

But I want to go out there and enjoy it. It was put there for me to see.
Walk to it...
That's part of the problem. There are huge areas where HUMANS are not allowed, not just ORV's. Just coincidence most of these areas are the most popular fishing spots.

..Just confirms why we quit going to OBX some time ago. They've taken away (well, made much more difficult), one of the main reasons for going, and the most fun thing to do out there (riding out on those beaches).
My BIL is an avid fisherman, used to love going there to fish. He doesn't go anymore, either, for same reason.
Perhaps if/when enough people do like we do and stop going to OBX completely because of this, and several businesses on OBX completely tank as a result....THEN maybe they'll get some sense about this.
